Description

Self-Reflection - Culture Culture is often defined as a group’s norms, values and attitudes which define the way individuals within these groups interact and live (Lamont & Small, 2008). Hofstede (2011) further split culture into two concepts being: ‘individualist’ and ‘collectivist’ cultures where individualist cultures prioritise independence and live as separate entities, whereas collectivist cultures live inclusively within their own cultural community. I was born in New Zealand and am considered Pakeha, however moved to Australia when I was young. So, personally I relate to a more individualist culture. I have grown up with great individualism and independence, I also value freedom and diversity. As someone within an individualist culture I have found that I expect people to be more independent and self-driven and I find it hard to relate to those from collectivist cultures who are much more group orientated. I have found that in a group setting I am inclusive and dynamic, and I can acknowledge different cultures without setting anyone aside. I feel as though being someone young in this generation I have a lot of insight into the changing of cultures and norms within society. I am much more open to diversity and multi-culturalism than most people. My personal culture has been shaped from my household and my family’s values and beliefs, as well as current society. My personal values of individualism and independence originate from being in a western household within Australia. My values of freedom and acceptance of diversity come from my own formed morals shaped by my generation, where acceptance and support for everyone is becoming more widely valued. My future professional practice of Clinical Psychology values intercultural awareness very highly, where it is crucial to acknowledge that everyone is different and people of different cultures interact differently (Fujishin, 2013). My cultural beliefs of individuality and diversity will be helpful in assisting me to set aside judgement when it comes to my future

profession. When it comes to working with people from different cultures, my cultural beliefs will allow me to be an ethical professional within my field....
