Self Reflection
Event #1 - Marijuana & Peer pressure When I was 13 years old I started smoking cigarettes first. My “friends” convinced me later to try marijuana. They were already doing it and it didn’t want to feel left out so I thought to myself why not try it, it won’t hurt anybody. I wanted to feel accepted and also because I thought it was a cool thing to do.
Effects of puberty on the experience ➔ Smoking leads to an early start in puberty ➔ Not having friends ➔ Feeling of not good enough to hang out with certain crowd. ➔ Poor self-esteem ➔ Feeling of being accepted.
Apply the theory Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory(Microsystem) - This theory suggests that a person’s development was affected by everything in their surroundings. The microsystem is the direct environment we have in or lives. Such as family, friends and classmates.
I was affected by my peer’s decisions. The environment I was in also played a huge part. I was around older teens when I was growing up. Everything that they were doing seemed cool and I looked up to them at the time.

Looking back Looking back I would have thought about the choice more. I wish I had followed my gut instincts. Which told me not to do it because I don’t know what is exactly in marijuana, it could have been anything.

Event #2 - Forming Identity In grade 9, I was bullied by the “popular crew” simply because I always wore my natural hair out and it was long. I didn’t like wearing weaves or hair extensions. I was told that I wasn’t black enough because I didn’t wear extensions and I was “whitewash”. I eventually decided to purchase hair extensions just to fit in with everybody else. The harassment ended and I did this just so they will leave me alone.
Effect of puberty on the experience ➔ Self-esteem issues ➔ Issues with developing future friendships ➔ Emotional ➔ Constant negative feelings ➔ The feeling of not being liked by others.
