This fraternal love is fully expressed in Goblin Market, one of Cristina Rossetti’s masterpieces. Between these, the concept of “sisterhood/brotherhood” is almost hidden, but we shall see that in the end, C. Rossetti shows it in the poem’s moral. Sisterhood is a term that evokes a complex set of ideas concerning woman’s attempt to expand her social role, and her pursuit of a special kind of heroism both through and beyond her traditional sphere. To be a sister or to be a brother, is to share with another person an emotional relationship, a physic affinity, not necessary dependent on an actual blood relationship. Ideend, the poet’s use of the term “sisterhood” in Goblin Market reveals the concept that both “male” and “female” roles are available to everyone. Through the central figures, Lizzie and Laura, Rossetti demonstrates that the female may potentially act as a redeemer and reedemed, as lover and beloved. It’s correct to view them as two distinct individuals who are equally incomplete. (Each lack the trait that is dominant in the other). Although Laura and Lizzie are quite different, they are equal in a very important way: neither sister is more superior to the other. We can also see that, however, the protagonist’s reactions to the goblins, indicate immediately the differences in their personalities. Yet, while there are marked differences between them, the girls are meant to be identified with one another: they lead virtually identical daily lives. Lizzie’s sacrifce for her sister, going to the goblin market and being mistreated, constitutes a sort of heroism. Her sacrifice will save her sister’s life. Realizing that strenght can derive from the interation, rather than isolation, of opposite states, Laura and Lizzie have achieved true “sisterhood”. Biographers and critics have argued that the themes of temptation, sexual exchange and sisterly redemption in this poem are influenced by its poets experience as an “associate sister” at Highgate Penitentiary for Fallen Women. Nevetherless, sisterhood, in all of its non-sexual ramifications is, for Lizzie and Laura, as well as for C. Rossetti, the primary goal.

La storiella racconta di due sorelle, Lizzie e Laura, che recandosi ogni sera a prendere l’acqua vicino al fiume vengono disturbate dalle grida dei folletti che cercano di attirare le giovani fanciulle al loro mercato di leccornie e frutti succosi. Una sera Laura cede alle voci lusinghiere di questi magici esseri, ma non avendo denaro con sé, paga un assaggio di frutta con un ricciolo dorato dei suoi capelli; tornata a casa cerca di convincere la sorella a seguirla il giorno successivo per godere insieme di tanta bontà, la sera successiva però Laura non li sente e non li vede più, al contrario della sorella, che temendoli, li ignora. Lizzie si accorge però che la sorella si sta ammalando, soffrendo come era successo ad una loro amica in età da marito che aveva ceduto al richiamo dei folletti e si era consumata giorno dopo giorno morendo di astinenza dai frutti velenosi. Desiderosa di salvare la sorella, porta allora con sé un penny d’argento e si reca al mercato magico dove la accolgono mostruose creature apparentemente benevole, ma dall’aria ambigua e a tratti malvagia. Rifiutando il loro invito di gustare i frutti prelibati, ma mostrando la sua ferma intenzione a voler acquistare i frutti per salvare sua sorella, scatena l’ira delle creature magiche che cominciano a picchiarla cercando di “forzarla” ad assaggiare i frutti proibiti. Quando finalmente capiscono che lei non aprirà mai la bocca, i folletti scompaiono e Lizzie corre dalla sorella in fin di vita per farle bere il succo rimastole appiccicato su tutto il corpo. La sorella lecca avidamente ciò che resta dei frutti e si addormenta, al suo risveglio si ritrova nuovamente giovane e rigenerata, la sua bocca brucia al pensiero di poter mangiare nuovamente quei frutti velenosi. Molti anni dopo,ormai sposate e con bambini, Laura racconta la loro straordinaria avventura alle sue figlie, raccomandando loro di non seguire le voci lusinghiere dei folletti e sottolineando che non esiste amica migliore di una sorella....
