Indications Diagnosis/evaluation of urinary retention (post-op, disease, unknown); assess need for catheterization; BPH

Outcomes/Evaluation Pt. remains calm/experiences no pain; unnecessary catheterizations are avoided

Potential Complications Open wound or bandaged wound on abdomen; do not use in the presence of flammable anesthetics

Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Pre: patient consent, position patient, expose abdomen, apply transmission gel Intra: use head of scanner in gel to obtain reading - different angles may be necessary; repeat after voiding to determine residual volume Post: wipe/clean gel from patient with paper towel/baby wipe; clean scanner with alcohol or disinfectant wipe

Client Education Patient is allowed a chaperone; steps of procedure; results of procedure; inform nurse of any discomforts/anxieties

Nursing Interventions Assess urine retention; hand hygiene; ensure privacy of patient
