Description of Skill non-invasive method of assessing bladder volume using ultrasonography. Probe placed externally on the abdomen over the site of the bladder. An ultrasonic transducer transmits sound waves which are reflected from the bladder to the transducer.
Indications To see how the bladder empties, to determine health issues such as vesicourerteral reflux, to visualize any inflammation, to determine if there is residual urine or incomplete emptying.
Outcomes/Evaluation Information is gathered on urinary retention, inflammation, or other possible bladder/kidney problems.
Potential Complications There may be pain during urination after the procedure for a few hours. There may also be scant bleeding after the test.
