Description of Skill Vaccines stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies against a specific disease.
Indications *Age related immunizations *Annual/Yearly influenza vaccines *Booster
Outcomes/Evaluation *Decrease or eliminate certain infectious diseases in society. *Prevent infectious diseases and their complications. Development of immunity *Improvement of local reaction to immunization with absence of pain, fever, and swelling at the site of injection.
Potential Complications *Severe allergic reactions *Common cold and other minor illnesses are not contraindication to immunizations *Severe febrile illness is a contraindication to all immunizations *Do not administer live virus vaccines (MMR, Varicella) to a child who is severely immunocompromised.

Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Pre: Performs appropriate client assessment prior to immunization. Assess allergies, height and weight. Obtain informed consent from parents. Prepare vaccines correctly. Intra: Demonstrate correct vaccine administration, accurate administration technique and site location Post: Document and setup future appointments. Provide VIS (Vaccine information sheet)
Client Education *Encourage parents to maintain up-to-date immunizations for the child *Instruct parents to avoid administering aspirin to the child to treat fever or local reaction following administration of a live virus vaccine due to the risk of Reye syndrome *Report to HCP if any adverse reactions occur
Nursing Interventions *Use strategy to provide atraumatic care. *Allow caregivers to use comforting measures. *Provide praise afterward. *Apply colorful bandage. (if applicable)
