STAGES OF GROUP THERAPY

Roeglin, Lauren P GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY PCN-167. Professor Harris

Orientation stage. AKA The Forming Stage

Power Struggle Stage. AKA The Storming Stage

The Cooperation and Integration Stage. AKA The Norming Stage

The Synergy Stage. AKA The Performing Stage

The Closure Stage. AKA The Adjourning Stage.

This stage was brought to attention by Bruce Tuckman in 1965. This was the first part of the model he made. Each member focus on the leader and accepts their role as such and accepts the authority.

This stage was made to start getting the group to come together and accept each other and their differences. They learn to listen here and accept.

This came about to follow up the previous stage. Now there is a goal put into place. They must work together and make that goal a reality. There is no team leader insight or involvement on the decision making.

This was the last part that was added to the model and was done much more recently. This is the end of the group adventure. Here we are a team not just people in a room.

There needs to be a boundary laid out. The clients need to see that the leader is open with the information and kind and caring. The leader needs to answer questions. This is where an icebreaker type of thing would take place. Give everyone a chance to get to know each other

Make a safe place for the group members to interact with each other. They also need the correct tools to be able to work through any type of conflict so the group as a whole can move on.

This was made as the team or group starts to work better together. They are starting to work as one and the power struggle is over. They see how the differences can make then great not hurt them. They want to work together rather than compete, it becomes normal. Here the group needs to let the facilitator or leader take a step back. They need to make more of the decisions and do the problem solving of each other’s lives and situations. Of course, if the group gets stuck the facilitator is there to get back on course or aid in the progression of the group.

The facilitator needs to step back and let the group work it out. They now have the tools to be able to work things out and communicate the proper way. Of course, the group must still be monitored and if things are going arye the leader must step in.

Here people get what many times they miss, closure. They can say good bye, exchange numbers to use each other for continued support and company. They are able to close this part of their life and move on to the very bright future they all worked for. In some cases this is where a referral to an in patient program in the extreme case that one is needed would be talked about and taken

Since this is the first stage this is really more of a explaining and learning stage. The clients learn about what is expected of them and what the rules are and the goals are. This is where they learn they are not in charge.

Here many of the choices and decisions of what is happening or going to happen and the direction of this group are made by the group. If working on something in small groups then the groups can elect one person to lead the group.

Here the group would be given tasks to complete and problems to solve. Make an issue that they have to work together for. Let them use each other’s experiences.

Here we make up new models and ways to use all the new found information and skills. Here we try to incorporate all the feelings we can, grief, sadness, anger, pain, depression denial.

care of. Here we would celebrate all the success that we have had thus far especially if a new member joins so we don’t end up reverting back to the forming stage. We also focus on the future so we can keep the goals fresh on the mind and keep things rolling.
