ISLAM: HAJJ        

Fifth pillar of faith Annual week long pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca Performed in the month of Dhul Hijjah Once in a lifetime duty upon male and females whose health permits “those who can make their way there” -Koran Consist of several ceremonies that symbolize the essential concepts of Islamic faith Commemorates the trials of prophet Ibrahim Over to million Muslims perform Hajj each year Instructed by Muhammed “and proclaim pilgrimage among them; they will come to thee on foot”

Ceremony: Pre – Hajj o Ihram  state of purity entered by hajj pilgrims o Comb hair, cut nails, wear white garments, no sex o Symbolises: -white = purity -symbol of unity, everyone is the same -money + status don’t matter brings adherents to a higher state of mind o Tawaf  circling the Ka’aba seven times anticlockwise o Symbolises: -“here I am at your service o G-d” showing G-d is at the centre of each Muslim and their life o Drink from zam zam o Sa’y  walking in between Safa and marwah o Symbolises: -re-enacts Hagar’s desperate search for life giving water and good Actual Hajj o Going to Mina -leave Mecca, paying and meditating -prayer = practice = expresses belief for love of G-d o Arafat -most important part of Hajj -symbolises: day of judgement when souls are resurrected from all parts of world for judgement day -place where Muhammed his speech- following his footsteps -Muhammed talks about it in Koran, thus belief in Koran expressed through doing it -seeking mercy for oneself +fam+ com o Night at Muzdalifa -spend night in prayer and collecting stones to throw at the jamrat (three stone pillars of different size)

-symbolises: Ibrahim throwing stones at Satan when he tried to dissuade Ibrahim from sacrificing his son Significance for individual: Affirming ones commitment to their faith Devotion towards Allah Elevates mundane ritual, to spiritual Spiritually, mentally and physically challenged (taken away from comfort zone) o Focus on inner Jihad and complete submission to Allah o Answers existential questions- time to focus on them o Chance to have sins rid of o o o o

Significance to community: o Set off to hajj as individuals, yet experience hajj as a community -creates unity – experienced by all o Millions participate in hajj – submitting to Allah + reaffirming beliefs in Islam and thus validating the importance of submission o Allows for continuation and growth of the Ummah Beliefs: Fifth pillar – foundation of belief and practice Immerse themselves in a greater level of Islamic life Address key issues of their existence and spirituality Central and focal belief in Allah as G-d is thoroughly re-iterated through hajj and rituals associated with it o Adherents feel a particular closeness to Allah - validates importance of submission to Allah
