Harlem Renaissance Essay Argue how the Harlem Renaissance has affected America and how it has made America what it is today? Through the early nineteen twenties to the late nineteen thirties the Harlem Renaissance has affected American culture through style of fashion, music, and literature. During the Harlem Renaissance the prohibition of alcohol was launched creating an underground “speakeasy” scene. This is where African Americans became more popular with their music, literature, and fashion while both whites and blacks joined together and inspired the civil rights movement. The style in the 1920s depended on where one was going, the occasion, and time of the day. The parties during the time of the Harlem Renaissance were held at famous clubs such as the cotton club, the savoy ballroom and the apollo theater were only blacks performed and white could only watch. House rent parties were popular as well because the host collected money for the places rented. These parties had many blacks attending, cooking southern dishes, and providing illegal alcohol. Literature in the era of the Harlem Renaissance inspired modern writers such as Alaine Locke and Zora Neale. Famous novels and poems that these writers were known for were “Their eyes were watching God” and “The Great Gatsby.” Alain Locke inspired the Black community. All of these books are important to society because they are read and taught from school to home. The poems and novels teach about racism and how it was to live in that era and to inspire upcoming writers. Without Harlem Renaissance, African American literature would not be popular because of the connection between whites and blacks, talents and their abilities to present their talent to society. The culture made an connection towards white people at the time and social equality started to emerge. Music was another factor that helped African Americans blend with white people at the time. African Americans were not only finding their voice through art of literature, but through music to define the style of music. Some examples of music in this era are artists such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellugnton. America stills appreciates Jazz and big band music and is heard all around the nation. The Harlem Renaissance changed America through the entrance of style, and music creating whites and blacks to become seen in society inspiring the civil rights movement. From dresses, suites, etiquette, new authors that were black inspiring social justice and expressing life of citizens in the jazz era. All these factors from the Renaissance continues today through academics, shops, bars, and clubs. Also through movies and novels.
