Description

Consider the following: How is a CIS a better solution to collecting and storing data? Explain at least one way a CIS is adaptable and accessible compared to a paper system. What is the financial impact on an organization?

1. A clinical information system (CIS) is an advantageous advancement in the health information technology field. It is an information system that has specific constructs that

make it better for collecting and storing data. The CIS is especially useful in critical care environments; it draws information from many other computer systems from different departments into an electronic patient record, providers can see at the patient’s bedside (Agency for Clinical Innovation). It benefits both the patient and the provider. The CIS improves communication between the many health professionals caring for each patient, provides all the information clinicians need to make good decisions, and encourages quality improvement (Agency for Clinical Innovation). 2. The CIS reduces the need for many different paper-based forms of medical records. According to the Agency for Clinical Innovation, ICU clinicians manage about 1700 clinical measurements per day per patient. If these providers did not have access to the CIS they must collect most of these 1700 measurements and record them on paper-based 24-hour ICU flow chart. The CIS allows for all of these measurements to be recorded electronically thus saving the provider time and greatly reducing the risk of error. 3. “Clinical information systems are planned not as cost-saving measures but as quality improvement measures,” (Shabot 2004). According to HealthIT, several studies estimate the cost of purchasing and installing an electronic health record (EHR) ranges from $15,000 to $70,000 per provider (2014). The financial cost may vary based on factors including: hardware, software, implementation assistance, training, and maintenance. The benefits of the CIS outweigh the costs, one critical mistake could cost more than it would to implement the system itself. References Agency for Clinical Innovation. (n.d.).
