Hinton Helper’s book stressed the economic and social disadvantages that are attached to the non-slaveholding whites compared to the slave masters. The situation in the 1850s, specifically on the Northern part of the country where the practice of slavery was less present strongly impacted the southerners who wrongly saw themselves economically evolved compared to the Northerners. As a matter of fact, southerners’ non-slaveholders were constantly humiliated by slaveholders to the south who shamefully continue to have the service of human beings to labor their fields and plantations night and day for nothing. Economically, non-slave-holding whites could not benefit the same leeway as the slave masters and were also socially pressured and diminished. Among its stubbornness to antislavery which Helper also considered to be a loss for the southerners in terms of substantial development and progress, he also pinpointed the fact that the
