Isma 1 Ardy Isma Professor Provost MUH 3055 6/19/18 Word Count: 624 Hip-Hop / Rap in today’s world of Black America Many African American musical artists have use Hip-Hop / Rap to talk about the problems that are in society. Many old hip-hop groups such as N.W.A, Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, Arrested development, Fugees, and more have used Hip-Hop as a way to talk about how blacks in America are being treated unfairly in society. The music genre of Hip-Hop and rap is also a platform where artist can talk and express themselves about sensitive topics in this country such as politics, racism, sexism, and religion. For instance, in the year of 1988, HipHop artist Chuck D from the group Public Enemy has stated that rap is “black America CNN”, which was true at the time and it is still quite true today. When Chuck D said that rap is “black America CNN” back in 1988, he meant it as a way to describe how Hip-Hop is now becoming a source of information for outsiders that are curious about how black Americans are living in society and his message still resonates into today’s HipHop world. 25 years since the day he has said that, hip-hop still reflects on the same issues that it had back then when Chuck D was actively still making music. In today’s world, Hip-Hop / rap artists such as Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Logic, and Denzel Curry all use their music to talk about the basic struggles and discrimination that a black person may face every day in America. For instance, Kendrick Lamar raps about where being black from where he is from which is Compton, California and how being a black person in this country can be a struggle. Kendrick Lamar also describes in majority of his songs such as his song “alight” where he talks about how blacks are not being treated fairly by the police, how black people in his

Isma 2 neighborhood are always a victim to gun / gang violence, and how black people are struggling to make ends meet financially, especially in a family household. As they are rappers that talks about the struggle of being a black person in America and prove that rap is “black Americas CNN”, they are some rappers that do not talk about being black in America and would rather talk about the opposite. For instance, in today’s musical genre of Hip-Hop and rap, there are artists such as lil pump, lil xan, soulja boy, and others that simply do not talk about being black in America at all and would rather talk about the lavish rich life that they are living, promoting the use of illegal drugs such as taking Xanax pills and drinking codeine syrup, and how they are better than anybody else. For instance, the rapper called lil pump has a song called Gucci Gang where he talks about how awesome his life is when comparing it to anybody else’s life with the way he is living with money, consuming high quality illegal drugs such as cocaine, and being with a lot of women all at once. Finally, as Hip-Hop / rap progresses overtime, the one thing that tends to not change is the amount of rappers that still follows Chuck D message when it comes to Hip-Hop / rap being the voice for “ black Americas CNN”. Although, they are some rappers in today’s world that would rather talk about getting paid and doing drugs, it does not hide the fact that Hip-Hop / rap music is a genre and platform for artist to talk about important things in this country such as racial discrimination and other situations a black person may face every day in America....
