Nadia Delgado January 18, 2022 Assignment Activity: Historical Context

1) Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event. 

The idea of human rights emerged stronger after World War II. The calls came from across the globe for human rights standards to protect citizens from abuses by their governments, standards against which nations could be held accountable for the treatment of those living within their borders. The idea of human rights spread quickly to India, Greece and eventually Rome. The most important advances since then have included: “1215: The Magna Carta— gave people new rights and made the king subject to the law. 1628: The Petition of Right— set out the rights of the people. 1776: The United States Declaration of Independence— proclaimed the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. 1789: The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen—a document of France, stating that all citizens are equal under the law. 1948: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights”. The first document listing the 30 rights to which everyone is entitled. Another historical context around human rights is when martin Luther king Jr. was watershed events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycot and the 1963 March on Washington, which helped bring about such landmark legislation as the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and is remembered each year on Martin Luther King Jr.

2) Describe a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event. 

The first person who fought for human rights was, Cyrus the Great. Another person is Martin Luther King, JR amongst others.

3) Explain the key historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event. 

Originally, people had rights only because of their membership in a group, such as a family. Then, a key historical figure in 539 BC, Cyrus the Great, after conquering the city of Babylon, did something totally unexpected, he freed all slaves to return home. Moreover, he declared people should choose their own religion. The Cyrus Cylinder, a clay tablet containing his statements, is the first human rights declaration in history. Another key historical figure that played a major role in Human Rights and Inequality is Martin Luther King, JR. MLK was a social activist and Baptist minister and a leader who played a key role in the American civil rights movement. He organized several peaceful protests as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, including the March on Washington in 1963. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, and, at the time, he was the youngest person to have done so. King sought equality and human rights for African Americans, all economically disadvantaged victims and all victims of injustice through peaceful protest. His was passionate about his goal of achieving equal rights and he never gave up. His drive strength encouraged and inspired others to continue the movement long after he was assassinated.

4) Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event. 

Yesterday was Martin Luther king Jr’s Birthday and a federal holiday where we celebrate him as a human rights leader and someone who wanted to give more and project not only African Americans, but for all victims dealing with human rights and inequality decimating situations.

5) Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of your topic. 

The historical event I picked regarding martin Luther king JR. and current event I picked regarding the current pandemic helps me understand my topic beter based off what these people fought and gave their lives up for. When doing some research, it allowed me to gather some assumptions towards my Research question how we can ensure dignity for all human beings with protection for minorities and how human rights can make a difference in inequality. I can notice more connections in protesting as to what people are fighting for. From past events to current protest events on being able to decide if we should get the vaccine or not should be our choice because it is our body and not the government having control over what we do to our body. It’s like bring a prisoner with slaves or human traffickers.
