Hot and Spicy By Oliver Phommavanh

Summary: Hot and Spicy is a story about a boy who is embarrassed and ashamed of his mum’s Thai cooking due to overwhelming tastes of spice. His school wanted to do a multicultural activity where each student brings in a plate of food of their own culture to represent their country. Having said that, the boy wanted his mum’s cooking to be extra spicy so that the teachers don’t ask his mum to cook for the school again. However, the plot twist is that they actually really liked it even though the spice was difficult to handle with. Main Characters: Mr Winfree, Rajiv, Yip’s, Kitchai, Albert, Mr Murphy Themes and Ideas: Multicultural Key Quotes: “I can actually see bits of chilli on my spoon. I shrug my shoulder and brace myself. It’s pure torture. Pg 84 “Sir, it’s just that I always bring the same crap to these celebrations.” Pg 82 “Mum and dad dance around in the kitchen like they’ve won lotto.”pg 83 “I try to stay cool even though it feels like I’ve been grilled on the BBQ” pg 84 “I take a spoonful of curry. My nostrils want to run away.” Pg 87

NOTES Connection between the three texts

-In all 3 texts, they all had to do with their own culture, making them feel discriminated against other people. -Friendship is a huge factor in all 3 text as it teaches us about how your peers can help support you during tough times of facing criticism from the rest. -Racism was a huge part of all 3 texts where they get isolated from the rest or how they can’t do this and that because of their culture. -In all 3 texts, there were certain characters that was bullied due to their race.

e.g.

multiple identity defining moment

 in all 3 texts the main character has a very supporting and loving family which they can depend upon.  all depicted families have maintained their traditional way of life according to their given culture.  all 3 main characters (who happen to be young boys) are ashamed of their family’s culture and want to be the same as everyone else.  it is only in H&S that Albert/main character feels a sense of belonging to a larger group at school....
