"The Line"

Could you imagine graduating at the top of your class, finding a career where you make six figures and have your world come crashing down in an instant? What if I told you, you could do everything right as far as education and steps into a brighter future, but things aren't happening? In the documentary "The Line" Individuals discuss their personal lives and how it is living in the system. The individuals that are featured throughout the documentary are relatable and Influential. They prove that the typical stereo type of the poor often being related to as "lazy, stupid, no skills, preferring to live poor and not being able to take care of their families" to rest. For example, John and Sheila are complete opposites in which both are struggling due to circumstances. John is a white male who lost his job and Sheila is a black woman who was successful until a fatal injury which changed her life. The separation of what is considered as "The Line" goes beyond race, setting boundaries for many.

The person that I feel is held responsible for their situation I would say would be John. My evidence is that I believe he didn’t make smart business choices and didn't invest his money into things that would of kept him thriving if he had the proper resources. I feel like for him to go from 6 figures is a big lost. Sometimes not everyone is financially educated on how to stretch their earning's making that much income. Also a person who is privileged and never had to think twice about conserving opposed to someone who knows how to survive with almost close to nothing, that person might have the biggest reality check. However, I do believe that people shouldn’t judge because it can happen to anyone to fall under the poverty line or get caught up in the working poor. Values and belief's greatly affect how others are perceived. A value is considered the worth, desirability and usefulness and a belief is an opinion or most times a conviction. As John mentioned earlier in the documentary, he described the feeling of "being defeated" as he joined the food pantry after speaking on how things went downhill from him in his life. Rev. Julian speaks on how he makes music to help spread awareness of how painful it is to have the system work against you as a black person in society. Being labeled without understanding the environment that is systematically designed for you to fail can have others perceive you as if it is your fault. The current state of the welfare system rest on how people often criticize those who are poor and needs an understanding that this can happen to anyone. As a human professional, I believe that it is important to be empathetic and being knowledgeable to further assist your client. Building a relationship with your client and getting a plan that you both agree on to help them help themselves. In the code of ethics, we are responsible to recognize and build on client and community strengths. We have to understand

that as human being we are all complex and, in many situations, can help as best as we can for the best of our clients.

Life is a roller-coaster where the unenviable often occurs. The system is often based on sets of values and beliefs, social policy and welfare programing to ensure the social welfare of America. Not every induvial has the same story so never judge a book by it's cover....
