Description

HUM/115 WEEK 3 DQ12 Wk3 Discussion: Practice Detecting Media Bias We cannot allow bias to deter us. This is especially important when viewing the news. Jeff Meyer shared the following site that will help shed light on bias in the news: https://www.allsides.com/ Thanks for sharing this excellent source Jeff! I would also like to share a source that you might find helpful. Class, as you know, being able to detect bias in the media can help us to evaluate the information being presented. The following website presents an examination of media bias and a lesson on how to detect media bias: http://www.umich.edu/~newsbias/index.html On the main page you can select "What forms does news bias take?" to begin the examination. Under this category there are different forms of bias and specific examples. Take a moment to review one of the categories. You can choose from word choice, omissions, limiting debate, story framing, or sources. In your examination, review the key questions and the examples presented. You can also use another example, like something more current. Class, how did answering these questions help you to evaluate bias? What other take aways did you gain from this activity? NBE. (n.d.). ANSWER

Omitting important news can lead to biased view of the population because omitted information can often be just as important as the one that has been presented. People are not able to make good decisions when they are not well informed or only part of the information is offered to them. We need to be careful when getting information based on poll results because they can often be altered by the form of questions or the way they are asked. Reporters should first verify the poll results before relying on the information presented in them. Omitting certain important information can have long term negative consequences. We are often tempted to make our decision based on what we read or hear but often don't think about the information that could possibly be omitted. It is important to pay

attention if there were questions that should be asked and were not and if the information comes from just one source or more unaffiliated ones. As the last presidential election has showed us, that every website from the right or left will have different viewpoints on everything that is being said. What I did was try looking at a right newsource such as Breitbart, and then read a left newsource such as Huffington Post. Other than this website, the presidential election has shown me many ways of how news sources can be biased towards an entire political party. From looking at different news sources and different biased viewpoints, you can then think critically on how to create your own viewpoint of the situation. Word choice is usually what I look for when try to look at biased information. Their word choice will have a big impact on how they feel about the entire situation. NBE. (n.d.).
