Directions: In the poem, you will notice that it consists of 4 stanzas (grouping of lines) divided by the phrase “I love you.” 1. Read and listen to the poem. 2. Then paraphrase/summarize EACH of the stanzas IN YOUR OWN WORDS. (5 points each x 4 stanzas = 20 pts) Write your responses below: Stanza #1: This poem is the only thing he has to offer which makes it seem that he is poor. When he says to “keep it like a warm coat” he uses the literary element simile that suggests the poem is warm and snuggly. He says “I love you” which means he is talking about his lover but he addresses this to “you” meaning his audience. Which shows how much he appreciates the people who are reading his poem.

Stanza #2: The speaker again repeats that he has nothing else to give. These lines remind the audience that they are reading a poem of a poor speaker .The speaker is using a metaphor, because he isn't saying his poem is like a pot full of corn, he is saying it is a pot full of corn. Meaning that is full and nutritious.

Stanza #3: The speaker said to treasure it. Making this poem look like something extremely priceless. When you are lost and looking for a sense of direction you

can look to this poem. This will make you feel safe and secure. We can use this to guide us when we are lost in the "wilderness" of life. In describing life as a "wilderness," we can again see the speaker using another metaphor.

Stanza #4: The speaker tells us "to go on living inside." What does he mean by inside? The author could be referring to multiple things here. When the world outside is hostile and doesn't care if we "live or die." When bad stuff hits we can always treasure this poem to feel loved and secure. These lines about love again affirm the relationship between love and poetry....
