Directions: During Day 1, you have repeatedly read/listened to the poem and summarized/paraphrased the poem in your own words. Now, do the following (5 points each x 4 = 20 points: 1. Read the poem again. 2. Please provide quotes of all of the SIMILES you can find (include the stanza number as well as the line number): Write your responses HERE: Stanza 1 line 3 “Keep it like a warm coat”, Stanza 1 line 5 “ like a pair of thick socks” Stanza 3 line 5 “tucked away like a cabin or hogan” 3. Please provide quotes of all of the METAPHORS you can find (include the stanza number as well as the line number): Write your responses HERE: Stanza 2 line 2 “a pot full of yellow corn/ to warm your belly in winter”, Stanza 3 line 2 and 3 “Keep it, treasure this as you would if you were lost, needing direction”

4. Do you notice a pattern in the author’s use of similes and metaphors throughout the entire poem? (***Hint: Do some parts of the poem contain more similes and metaphors than others?) Please describe the pattern. Write your responses HERE: In the beginning of the poem the author compares the poem that he is writing to a scarf, cabin, gift, and warm coat. The repetition of the word ‘I love you’ shows his passion towards poetry and his audience. The pattern throughout the entire poem is the repetition of smilies and metaphors. However, some parts have more metaphors than smilies and vice versa. The author is comparing the poem to reality to make the readers feel loved. With the continuous use of metaphors, smilies, alliteration the author makes it become more clearer with the interjections of “I love you” after each stanza. 5. Why do you think Jimmy Santiago Baca chose to structure the poem the way that he did? Is there any meaning in this structure and how it relates to the content and ideas of the poem? Explain your reasoning.Write your

responses HERE: What I have noticed is that the poem is written in a free verse but the lines do follow a specific rhyme scheme but there are scattered instances of rhyme throughout the text. He decided to write the poem like that so he can put more emphasis on interacting with the readers to make them feel loved and secured. To get a better understanding of what he is trying to say....
