I am Sam Movie Review By Aliyah Nicole B. Rubinos

The movie is all about a man named Sam, he is diagnosed with an intellectual disability, he had a daughter named Lucy which I don’t clearly understand if she’s really adopted or not. At the first part, Sam is a like those other normal persons living a normal life, it was actually a good start for a movie since it portrays how these persons w/ disability can live like others normal without being a different person to them. A big responsibility is handed to him when Lucy came to his life, at first he find difficult to take care of Lucy it’s because he doesn’t know anything yet, but gladly through the help of her neighbor named Annie, from then he begin adjusting to the needs of Lucy even his friends were there to the rescue, his friends were also like him. This movie is interesting even at the beginning. In my own opinion, Sam is very influential to the persons on his life. Starting from his friends, he showed profound friendships with them, Sam values his friends so much that Sam would be there always in their karaoke night and even in the trial court, his friends were there for him it shows that Sam is a good companion. Sam’s impact was simply being him; he doesn’t hide his identity as a person w/ disability, and that’s what people loves him because he’s outgoing, he’s lively, he’s bringing out happiness to people. There this woman whom he bumped of but instead of getting mad on Sam, she just ignored Sam and said it was okay. But what Sam most have an impact with? Sam made an impact to Lucy, he became a loving and caring father to Lucy, he is always there for Lucy, from playing, reporting in front of her classmates, from eating on their favorite restaurant. The line which imprinted on me the most is when Lucy and him were reading a book, Lucy hesitates to read a part of the book but Sam convinces to read it aloud because he like Lucy to read book. The line was “How can we be so different, but so much alike?” It’s like looking on a same person but with a different personality, it speaks much between a person w/ disability and a normal person. Lucy became a good person with a good heart because of his father, despite of his differences, Lucy is not sorry for his Dad being a different among other Daddies. Sam encountered a lot of struggles as a person w/ disability, especially on Lucy. It was when Sam fought for Lucy’s custody, at first no one accepted to Sam’s defender on the court but Rita helped her because she doesn’t want to be humiliated in front of other people but later on, she realizes what Sam is really fighting for. The result of the struggle of Sam because of his differences is losing the custody of Lucy, he knows himself that he is the father of Lucy but he doesn’t know anymore when the time comes that Lucy will be fully grown. Personally, what I learned from this movie is that “all you need is love”. Sam may not be as intelligent as any other persons, Sam may not teach Lucy about equations, sciences or other difficult lessons but Sam teaches her about the lesson that one can never learn from books: lessons on life and love. I Am Sam is a story that contradicts the importance of stature or intelligence in a person’s life. We become better persons not by striving to get higher GPAs or by reading more books. We become better by trying to live each day with a pure heart full of compassion, respect and honesty. People must not be judged by what they are but by who they are and how they relate to everyone else. As a line in the movie goes: "One’s intellectual capacity

has no bearing on one’s ability to love." Sam shows us a love that is unconditional, a love that makes allowances for mistakes, a love that doesn’t give up....
