Bully Movie Reflection - Sierra De Jong.

My thoughts and reactions to the film At the beginning of the film, we were introduced to 3 kids in middle school. Tyler was a student who committed suicide from bullying, Alex was a kid who just wanted someone to call their friend and nobody wanted to be around him because they thought he was weird, and Kelby a student who is part of the LGBTQ community. I was disappointed and upset at how their peers treated them. Even the teachers chimed in on the bullying, the teachers are supposed to be there to “protect” the students. Also, the principal had no clue about what was going on and how to handle bullying situations. Tyler’s parents knew their child was bullied and they never did anything about it which is very shocking and disappointing. Hearing how Alex was abused on the school bus made me upset and the bus driver did not do anything about it. New insights about the causes and impacts of bullying. Provide evidence-based responses to bullying and things that CYCP can do in their roles. Bullying can lead to suicide. Some kids would rather keep what they are experiencing at school to themselves because they feel as if nobody would care or nothing can be done anyway. Bullying also continues when they are at home. Kelby’s community stopped associating themselves with her family because she was gay. In the movie the principal overhead something that was going on outside on the playground. 3 students were in an altercation and one was dismissed simply because he didn’t want to be there and wanted no part in any consequences. The principal let him know leave, knowing he was involved in the altercation that took place outside. She never tried to figure out what the exact issue was between the boys, she jumped to conclusions and made the students shake hands as if the situation was just a simple disagreement. I feel as if she forcing them to be friends. As a CYCP, I would separate the boys and get an understanding of both sides of the story and try and figure out why the bully is hurting the other students. Also, provide the victim with a choice and a chance for their voice to be heard. For example, having a mediation to help the victim speak his mind and have a chance to be heard without any interruptions from the bully. Think about how your own school experiences have shaped the way you think about bullying. I experienced bullying when I was in high school and I never told anyone about it because I thought nobody would care and bullying was something that everybody experienced so I should just get over it. After participating in a bullying awareness workshop at school, I learned that it was not okay and there is staff willing to listen to me I just need to open up and speak to them. I also learned that bullying is not something that anybody should face alone. Reflect on how you can make yourself aware of what is happening with the young people at the schools you will be working at (during placement or in a hired position)

I can make myself aware of what is happening with the young people by being around them, paying attention to how they are interacting with their classmates and listen to how things are being said around the classroom and playground. Noticing any kind of usual behaviours such as isolation, unwanted physical contact and unnecessary attitudes. What are the limits placed on you by your profession and/or role as a CYCP in a school? Some limits that are placed on me by my profession are not being able to issue out any suspensions or consequences for bullies. The most I can do as a CYCP is figuring out the issue and trying to stop future problems. Also being able to provide resources such as counselling for the victim and advocate for them....
