Description

Sacred spaces are usually considered to be of adamant value in most religions. They provide people with a space that offers increased proximity to their deities and a community of similar beliefs. It is not uncommon for us to find similarities in these spaces across different religions. One such example would be the sacred spaces in Christianity and Islam; given their common roots yet different paths and beliefs, one might find various similarities as well as striking differences.

The basilica of Saint Pierre-aux-Nonnains in Metz, France is one of the oldest churches in France. It was originally built to be a part of a Roman spa complex in 380 A.D., however, it currently serves as a chapel, that too one of the most famous chapels in Europe. It is easy to spot intricate details about Christianity reflecting in the Saint Pierre-aux-Nonnains chapel, this includes the space being able to hold a decently large people for group worship much like other churches built in the earlier centuries. It has a long rectangular build with side aisles as well as wall paintings and mosaics adorning the insides. The chapel is surrounded by a courtyard, which is a common feature in many churches. The popularity of four-iwan mosques gradually spread throughout Islam and various mosques

initially inspired by other architectures were converted to the four -iwan architecture, including the Great Mosque of Ishfahan. The four-iwan architecture fundamentally holds a courtyard within a monumental hall known as the iwan. Additionally, out of the three iwans, the iwan which faces Mecca is often the largest and the most adorned with decorations. One might find various physical features in Islamic and Christian sacred spaces that fall parallel to each other. This can be seen with both the Great Mosque of Isfahan and the basilica of Saint Pierre-aux-Nonnains having a courtyard, even though it is situated in
