Team Exercise 3: Analysis of “Gung Ho” Film

INSTRUCTIONS: Prior to watching the film: Read the exercise instructions. While watching the film:  Complete Part 1 individually After watching the film:  Discuss your individual answers for Part 1 with the rest of the team and agree on a single team submission for Part 1 (please reference material from Chapter 4).  Discuss answers for Part 2 with the rest of the team and agree on single 1-page team report (please reference material from Chapter 7). What and where to submit: Team submission for Part 1 and 1-page team report for Part 2. Only people on the team who have actively contributed and worked on the exercise will receive the credit. All participating team members will receive the same grade. Please include names of the members who actively participated in the exercise and submit on BlackBoard. Only one team member needs to submit the report for the whole team. Format: single space, 12-point font, 1-inch margins. Part 1 does not have a page limit. Part 2 report has a one (1) page limit. Please include appropriate in-text and end-of-text references on a separate page. Please see Team Exercise Rubric for grading guidelines.

Part 1: Complete the following scale and compare the two primary cultures represented in the film Gung Ho: the Hadleyville (USA) and the Japanese cultures. For each cultural value orientation (e.g., Power distance, Uncertainty Avoidance), circle the appropriate response to a question using the 5-point scale below and provide an example scene from the movie that clearly portrays your rankings for 1) Hadleyville and 2) Assan Motors (please clearly explain how the scene from the movie portrays your ranking).

Please make sure to provide examples from specific scenes in the film. 1. Identify and describe one scene that illustrates differences in verbal communication styles across the two cultures. Describe how some of the cultural differences in value orientations (e.g., individualism vs. collectivism, uncertainty avoidance, power distance, long-term/shortterm orientation) you identified in Part 1 may contribute to these differences in verbal communication styles. 2. Identify one scene that illustrates a communication barrier. What could both parties do to achieve greater communication effectiveness?
