Objectives At the end of the class lesson, the students should be able to: a. Identify the different indigenous materials used for handicrafts. b. Give examples of hand-made products made of indigenous materials here in the Philippines. c. Appreciate the importance of using indigenous materials in making handicrafts.

Procedures Before the lesson A. Review The teacher will recall their previous lesson by asking questions to the students. B. Motivation The teacher will flash a pictures of plants that can be found from the environment. Direction: Give the name of plants shown in the pictures.

During the Lesson C. Abstraction The teacher will ask the following questions. 1. What have you noticed on our activity? 2. What do you call to those plants that you have seen in the pictures? 3. When you hear the word indigenous materials, what comes to your mind?

The teacher will now proceed to the discussion.

Indigenous Materials- These are raw materials that are naturally found from the environment.

Basic Indigenous Materials Used for Making Filipino Handicrafts

Here are some of the basic materials used by craftsmen in making Filipino handicraft products:

1. Abaca – This is one of the most popular raw materials that can be found here in the Philippines. Also known as Manila hemp. Abaca fibers are used for making various products like bags and slippers.

Examples of Abaca Products:

Bamboo - This is a kind

of

grass

that’s used in making most of Filipino-made furniture. Versatile and highly reliable raw materials.

Examples of Bamboo Products:

3. Buri – Extracted from the matured leaves of the buri palm. The fiber is durable and resistant to moisture.

Examples of Buri Products:

4. Coconut Shells – If there’s one kind of tree that you can surely say “abundant” in this country, it’s the Coconut tree. It is an agricultural waste and is available in plentiful quantities throughout tropical countries worldwide. Aside from the tasty coconut fruit and strong planks of coco lumbers that this tree produces, craftsmen also find use in Coconut shells. Various products are being made out if this material such as coin banks, buttons, flower vases and lamp shades.

Examples of Coconut shells Products:

Rattan – This material is often used in making furniture. In a typical Filipino house, you will see a set of furniture made with rattan, a bamboo-like wood which is more hallow and solid.
