Description

COMP-2057-91 Introduction to the Internet Flexible Learning/Distance Education School of Computer Science - University of Windsor Assignment #3: File Transfer Protocol (5%) This assignment will give you opportunity to learn how to upload and download files using the file transfer protocol or similar (a secure version or SSH). This will assist you when you are learning to design your own Web sites and have to upload your files to the server. Part A: How to do it You will be transferring your Web pages and images using the FTP PROGRAM called FileZilla. FileZilla works on both platforms. Just install the correct version (Windows or MAC) WINDOWS/MAC USERS INSTRUCTIONS Step 1: Download FileZilla FTP program found in the RESOURCES Step 2: Install FileZilla from your downloads on your Windows or MAC computer. Step 3: Run the program. Please use the Site Manager from the File menu. Select "New Site" and rename it to "electron". Enter the Host and Port as shown below, and to save the site connection, press "OK". Now open File -> Site Manager and select electron, press "Connect".

NOTE: Replace "userid" with your UwinID. UwinID is your email name without @uwindsor.ca.

Step 4: You should now be connected to the electron server. (see below)

Step 5: To add files to the server just “drag” them from your Local computer and “drop” them to the Remote server (aka your Electron Account). Part B: Now show me you can do it! This is the marks part! WINDOWS USERS: You may use NotePad (default program) to write your web pages OR download NotePad++ (recommended) or a program called Brackets. Please be sure to save your files as a "text" file. MAC USERS:

You may use TextEdit (default program) to write your web pages OR download a program called Brackets (I recommend this program). Please be sure to save your files as a "text" file.

1. Create a local file on your hard drive. Type into this file some remarks stating that you understand the FTP process. Save it with the name "assign3.txt". 2. Start the FTP program FileZilla to upload the file you created with one of the text editors (NotePad, NotePad++, TextEdit or Brackets). 3. Log on to electron.cs.uwindsor.ca server. 4. Upload the file assign3.txt (Drag and Drop). NOTE: There are several ways/programs used to upload files. If you would prefer to use another method, you may.

RECAP: 1. Create your web pages using a text editor (ex. Brackets program). 2. Upload your web pages (and images) using a FTP program (ex. FileZilla). 3. View your web pages using a Web browser (ex. Google Chrome). It is particularly important that you meet the due date for this assignment because it is extremely valuable to your final grade that you can upload files to the Web server (Electron) at the University of Windsor.

Assignment #3 Marking Scheme (5%, 5 marks) 1. Uploading the file to the Electron server. (3 marks) 2. Correct file name. (1 mark) 3. Submitting the file to Blackboard as well to receive your mark. (1 mark) You will upload your “assign3.txt” file to the Electron server. Please verify that you have done this by going to your own URL. Ex. http://electron.cs.uwindsor.ca/~UwinID where UwinID is the first part of your email address at the University of Windsor as described above.

You will also attach your “assign3.txt” file in Blackboard as proof for this assignment.

Save these instructions. You will need them for assignments #4 and #5.

Assignment #3 is due by the end of the fifth week of the course.
