Fall 2017: Interpersonal Communications Chapter 11: Communication Climate What is Communication Climate? • Communication Climate- the social tone of a relationship How Communication Climates Develop: • Confirming messages- convey valuing, positive • Disconfirming messages- lack of regard, negative Levels of Message Confirmation: • Confirming Messages: o Recognition- recognizing communication is occurring o Acknowledgment- shows interest in communication o Endorsement- highest level, on their side • Disagreeing Messages: o Argumentative- stay positive, but willing to debate o Complaining- can be positive or negative o Aggressiveness- put someone down, negative • Disconfirming Messages: o Impervious response- no response, ignoring communication o Interrupting response- stage-hogging, break into conversation o Irrelevant response- irrelevant feedback to conversation o Tangential response- acknowledge them, but go off on another tangent o Ambiguous response- message has more than one meaning o Incongruous response- contains contradicting messages Creating Supportive Climates: • Evaluation vs Description o Evaluation—judges o Description—offers thoughts without judging • Control vs Problem-Orientation o Control—proposes solution o Problem orientation- finding solution and working together • Strategy vs Spontaneity o Strategy—hides alternative motive o Spontaneity—open and honest • Neutrality vs Empathy o Neutrality—indifference
