Authors Note 1. The author is Jon Krakauer. 2. He is fascinated by Chris McCandless’s life because he sees parallels between Chris and himself. He also said he was haunted by his starvation and the particulars of his story. 3. He admits that although he tried, he can not be an objective observer. 4. This book is about the story of Chris McCandless leaving his life to go into the wild forest. In a deeper sense, this book is about the wilderness effect on American imagination, the bond between father and son, and the appeal of high risk activities. Chapter 1 1. I think that the author started it with a map to show where Chris is and his progression through the journey. 2. Jim Gallien is an electrician who picked up Chris while he was hitch hiking. Jim was concerned that Chris was unprepared. He gave Chris a few extra supplies he had. 3. Gallien was concerned that Chris didn’t have basic necessities to survive in the Alaskan national park. He had very little food, his shoes were not water proof, and his gun was not powerful enough to kill large animals. Chapter 2 1. Alex Supertramp is Chris McCandless. He went by the alias Alex. 2. The significance of the London quote was to set the stage and help us picture what the wild was like. It hints at the death of Chris. 3. His body was found in a bus along the Stampede trail. 4. Chris had left a note outside the bus asking for help because he was injured and weak. He also left his camera and film, a diary, and the note....
