Description

ISDS 1100 Online Sections 1 & 2 Fall 2017 SYLLABUS Instructor: Joni Matherne Catanzaro, Information Systems and Decision Sciences (ISDS) Best contact: Email [email protected] and type ISDS 1100 along with the email topic in the subject line. You must provide the appropriate email subject line, and in the body of the email, you must provide your full name. ISDS Office: 2230 Business Education Complex, Phone: 225-578-2501 (no voice mail exists) Office hours are MW from 12:45-3:00 pm or by appointment.

Course Delivery: ISDS 1100 is a 75-99% Web-based Course. There are no lecture or lab meeting times. Students go to the LSU testing center to take tests. Otherwise, all of the learning activities are online in Cengage Brain MindTap and are available 24/7. Students may use campus PC lab computers to complete their MindTap work.

Course Objective: This course is designed to teach the student about the use of Information Systems and Decision Sciences (ISDS) in business. Computer concepts highlight the most recent developments in computer tools and technology. This course encourages critical thought and experimentation with the latest Microsoft Office 2016 software. Learning activities will focus exclusively on the valuable skills students need to be successful in college and beyond for Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access.

LSU Email: All students must have an LSU email account. All correspondence for this course will go to a student's LSU email account. Therefore, please do not forward your LSU email to another account because you may miss vital communication. If you require assistance or need to report problems with your LSU email account, please call the LSU ITS Help Desk at 225578-3375, visit the website http://www.lsu.edu/it_services/ or send email to [email protected].

Course Materials: Purchase the required Cengage MindTap access code. Register for Cengage through the link on your course Moodle page. Students must use their full name as shown officially on LSU Moodle (do not use nicknames) and follow instructions and links on Moodle to properly register for Cengage and begin the course. This course does not have a book. Instead, there is a custom access code for Cengage Discovering Computers and Microsoft Office/MindTap that each student must purchase. Classmates cannot share access codes and must purchase a new access code; there are no used codes for purchase. One student can only use the access code information purchased. Every student is required purchase this access code in order to take tests and complete assignments. Without this access code, a student cannot pass this class! Students use the access code to gain access to the MindTap application in a simulated environment where students will practice and learn Microsoft Office and computer concepts. The access code is available for purchase at the LSU bookstore (ask for it upstairs at the textbook customer service desk). However, a student can also choose to purchase the code directly online through the link on Moodle for this course section. All work previously completed is cleared by MindTap after a student changes course sections. There is an option to use MindTap for a trial period of 14 days beginning on the first day of class. After 14 days, the student would need to purchase MindTap to continue using it for the remainder of the course. This feature allows ALL students to stay up-to-date with assignments due early in the semester. You do not need Microsoft Office installed on your computer to complete the lessons in MindTap. If your computer or Internet connection is not working properly, then use the campus computer lab locations described later in the syllabus.

The 14-day free trial period ends on Monday, September 4, 2017. MindTap activities and tests are graded. Students must complete all homework assignments individually and before the deadlines on MindTap. Most homework will be due on Fridays at 10:00 AM in the morning according to the weekly schedule on MindTap. No late assignments for credit will be accepted. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with the deadlines and test appointments. Credit will only be given for work completed before the deadlines on MindTap. Students will not be excused from completing homework due to their own computer not working properly or the Internet connection not working properly. Most activities and tasks work on a PC or a Mac and typically work best in Google Chrome web browser. This is a business course, so find a PC at the campus locations listed on the syllabus if your computer is not working properly. Important: You will be tested in the LSU testing center on a PC using Windows and a traditional keyboard and standard mouse. Those who practice the skills on the same equipment as that testing environment will perform better on the tests. In sports, this is called the home field advantage, which is a psychological and physiological advantage. Assignments designated with a “G” are for a grade and must be completed for credit before the deadline. No late assignments for credit will be accepted. Assignments designated with a “P” are for practice and are not for a grade. Reading the online textbook chapters in MindTap for Microsoft Word, PPT, Excel, Access, and Computer Concepts are educational but reading is not a graded activity. VIEW GRADEBOOK on MindTap to see: Letter D is for DROPPED scores. Letter G is for GRADED items. Letter P is for PRACTICE items and are not for a grade. DROPPED SCORES: I will generously drop the lowest three graded trainings and the lowest three graded practices this semester on MindTap. You should view your own MindTap grade book and see that the dropped scores are shown with letter D and the color red with a strike through the score.

Scheduling Tests at LSU Testing Center: All tests will be computer based. All tests will be held in the Computer Testing Center in Himes Hall. Students are responsible for scheduling ALL of their own tests using the Computer Testing Center website. The instructor will not make test appointments for students due to limited time or availability: http://www.cae.lsu.edu/default.asp All students are responsible for making sure they can log into Windows on a campus lab computer using their myLSU ID and password prior to each test. A student must bring a valid picture ID each time a student attends a test. LSU Testing Center will make the first test appointments available for scheduling a day or two days after the drop/add period is over.

Page 2|8

TEST VS. BACKUP TEST: There are two versions of each test for Word, PPT, Excel and Access. The regular, normal skills activity test that everyone must take and the Backup Test just in case there would happen to be an Internet outage during the testing session. STUDENTS ONLY SHOULD TAKE ONE TEST, THE REGULAR TEST, AND NOT TAKE BOTH THE REGULAR TEST AND THEN ASK TO TAKE THE BACKUP TEST. MindTap gradebook will only keep the score for the regular test so disregard the zero for the backup test. The Backup Test is taken if and only if, in the rare occurrence of the testing center having to give you the Backup Test. The testing center will communicate this to your instructor. STUDENTS are NOT allowed to take the Backup Test as a do-over, or as an illegal attempt to possibly earn a higher score after taking the regular test.

Testing Policy: Al lt estappoi nt ment swi l lbeonehouri nl engt h.If you are a student receiving extra test time and special testing accommodations through LSU Disability Services http://students.lsu.edu/disability, it is your responsibility to make your instructor aware of this as soon as possible and email the letter of accommodations from Disability Services to your instructor at least three days prior to the first test. LSU Disability Services has the ability to administer all tests. For this course, you will only be allowed extra test time and special testing accommodations when you take the tests at Disability Services and NOT allowed your accommodations at the regular testing center in Himes Hall. More detailed information about scheduling testing and the policies of the testing center can be found in later sections of this syllabus.

The student must provide DOCUMENTATION of the reason for absence and should submit this documentation to his instructor prior to scheduling the make-up test with the instructor. According to LSU PS-22, students are responsible for giving reasonable advance notification and appropriate documentation of the reason for an absence. http://sites01.lsu.edu/wp/policiesprocedures/policiesprocedures/22/ According to the LSU Catalog, “A student who, because of illness or other valid reason, is absent from any final examination may take a special final examination only with the authorization of the dean of the student’s college.”

Policy for a missed test without a valid reason: If a student misses a test for a reason not stated in LSU PS-22 or if documentation cannot be provided for the absence, ONE make-up test will be allowed AND only for half credit. There are no makeup tests for missed makeup tests.

Page 6|8

ISDS 1100 and LSU Testing Center Scheduling Policy: Students are required to schedule their own test appointments and must schedule them by the Friday before the testing week begins. Before the testing window has begun:  

A student can schedule, or reschedule, any time slot available, and move it to any other time slots available, as many times as they wish. If a student is unable to reserve a seat for the desired time, and does not want to schedule for another time, then they must: 1. Please do not contact your instructor and ask if I will give you a seat at that time due to limited time and availability. 2. View our website, without signing in, and see if any early seats are available in the top left. a. If early seats are available then they can try to get an extra seat by walking in to the lab and asking the check-in proctor if extra seats are currently available (extremely limited availability). -If you choose to skip a scheduled appointment for a chance of a walk-in, then you are risking a guaranteed time to take your exam! -If you choose to not schedule an appointment for a chance of a walk-in, then you are risking not be able to take your exam at all!

After the testing window has begun: 

 

Whether or not an exam is previously scheduled, the student can only schedule for the current day. – (This is what gives all students the ability to reserve a seat for their exam, instead of allowing a single student to reserve, and let go of, several spots after it is too late for other students to reserve.) If an exam is already scheduled, then it can ALWAYS be rescheduled for another time slot in the same day, or on an earlier day. It cannot be moved to a later day. If a student is unable to reserve a seat for a desired time, then they must: 1. Wait until the day they wish to schedule their appointment (midnight) and try to schedule it. Page 7|8

2. Please do not contact your instructor and ask if I will give you a seat at that time due to limited time and availability. 3.

If a student is unable to schedule an appointment, or misses their appointment, and is unable to obtain a seat during their testing window either through their instructor, or by walking-in, then they must request a makeup from the instructor. Makeups are not guaranteed and follow individual course policies and LSU Policy Statement PS-22 In ISDS 1100, makeups for unexcused absences are only worth half-credit.
