Boucher 1 Lawson Boucher Instructor Adams IT-200 20 June 2021

IT Disciplines: Computer Science: Computer science is the study of computers themselves, as well as

the hardware and software that supports them. It is also the study of computer theoretical and practical applications. Computer science can be thought of as the foundation for other disciplines in IT. It makes up the structure on which disciplines like Information Techology can build on. Some careers that use computer science include Software Developer, and Computer Systems Analyst. Some tools and technologies that would be applicable to these careers might include IDE’s, GitHub, System Flowcharts, and Decision Tables. Information Systems: Information systems is the study of computer systems with a focus on collecting, storing, and processing data. For example, Amazon uses information systems to find products to recommend to you, or even Netflix to find other shows you might like. This discipline is related to the others in IT because it refers to the whole system used for processing data whereas information technology focuses more on the technology used to do so. Some careers in information systems can be Information Systems Analyst, and Information Systems Manager. Some tools for these careers include backup systems, database software, and monitoring software/tools. Engineering: IT engineering is a discipline in which people specialize in the engineering of software and hardware computer systems. For example, hardware engineers specialize in designing and advancing computer hardware such as GPU’s or CPU’s, though it is not limited to just computer hardware. It could also include medical equipment or vehicle self-driving

Boucher 2 hardware. This relates to the other fields by solving engineering problems in IT, like how do we make processors faster or how can we optimize this application? Careers for this discipline include Hardware and Software Engineers. Tools for these careers include electrical testing, repair tools, and specialized computer software. Information Technology: Information technology is used within a business to provide connectivity, systems for using and administering information, infrastructure, as well support for these systems. This relates to the rest of the disciplines by using the technology that engineers create to provide a computer system for a business's operations. Some careers in IT include Network Administrator, IT Technician, and Cloud System Administrator. Some tools that might be useful in these careers include, asset tracking, monitoring software, management tools, and automation tools. 

Programming and Scripting: Programming and Scripting seem similar on the surface, but they have different

applications and use cases. Scripting does not require that it be compiled in order to run, rather is it interpreted. Programming needs to be compiled. Scripting tends to be less code intensive making it easier to learn. In IT scripting is becoming very prevalent in automating tasks especially through the use of tools like Ansible. For example, an IT admin can create a quick script that can install a package on a bunch of machines at once. Programming has its place as well such as creating a custom application to pull in information from servers and display it in a central location. 

Information Technology Careers: For my IT careers I chose the following, Cyber Security Analyst, System Administrator,

and Infrastructure Architect.

Boucher 3 Cyber Security Analyst (Entry Level) Job Posting: I believe that a security analyst is most closely aligned with information technology. Some roles and responsibilities in this position include, providing expertise regarding vulnerabilities, exploitation/attack scenarios, and the risk in terms of likelihood and impact. Some tools for this position include, Metasploit, Nessus, and Snort. Education wise many employers require a Bachelor’s degree in some kind of IT related field, while cyber security focus is preferred many are fine with something broader like computer science. Getting a degree like computer science can be applied in many other careers in the IT field where as Cyber Security is pretty specific. Certifications for this position are CompTIA’s Security+, Network+, CySA+, and CISSP. While most of these are specific to security, the Network+ can be applied in many areas as it gives you a fundamental understanding of computer networking. System Administrator (Mid Level) Job Posting: I believe that system administrator also falls into the information technology category. Roles and responsibilities for this position might include, deploying and supporting Windows Server 2012 R2 +, diagnose and resolve Windows 10 PC issues, Support VMware and SAN implementations, as well as deploy and support network switches. Since this position administrates most if not all of the infrastructure the roles and responsibilities list is quite a bit more extensive. Tools for this position include, RSAT, Wireshark, Powershell, FTP software, and Ansible. For education many employers will also want a Bachelor’s degree within IT. Certifications for this position might include, Microsoft’s MCSE, CompTIA’s Server+, or Red Hat’s RHCE. These will vary depending on what vendors are in use and what type of systems they support. CompTIA’s certifications are always great to consider since they are vendor agnostic and give you a good foundational understanding. From there you can easily transition to vendor specific certifications.

Boucher 4 Infrastructure Architect (Senior Level) Job Posting: I believe infrastructure architect can fall under information technology as well. Roles and responsibilities for this position include designing and implementing advanced networking architectures, security, container solutions, systems administration, as well as other duties related to designing infrastructure. Tools for this position include, diagram tools like Visio, Trello, Slack (Communication), and LeanIX. For education this position generally requires at least a Bachelor’s degree somewhere in IT. Certifications for this position might include, AWS Certified Solution Architect, CISSIP-ISSAP, Red Hat Certified Architect, as well as certification from the previous two positions. This position is one of the highest paying in the industry due to its inherent complexity and requirement to focus on the big picture while looking at the fine details. While I think I would enjoy all of these positions for me, I think a Linux system administrator career is what I would ultimately like to achieve. While an architect job may pay considerably higher, I feel it would be too much stress. I like to work hands on, configuring switches, servers, and troubleshooting equipment so system administrator would be a good fit.
