Description

It Ain’t Safe is a song performed by British Rapper Skepta. The song features a hook from Young Lord, also known as ASAP Bari. The track was released in form of a promotional video on 2 November 2014 and features on Skepta’s fourth album Konnichiwa. It Aint Safe is a track which gives its audience a view into the life of a drug dealer from Tottenham, North London. The area has one of the highest crime rates in the country, especially for drugs and gun related violence, making it a dangerous place to live. This is something Young Lord himself can relate to as he grew up in the equally dangerous neighbourhood of Harlem, NY. In It Aint Safe, Skepta explains that the drug fiends on his block were big fans of his product and his packs were selling like hotcakes. He explains that he sold drugs to make money in his youth; so much so that there would be remnants of the crack inside his phone’s buttons. Skepta explains in his track that Black Leather Boots are the footwear used when undergoing criminal activity such as burglary, theft or violence. Skepta details how he runs up in the victim’s house with intension to exert some form of violence upon his victim. He inuates that the boots do not leave evidence and can be easily disposed. Skepta clowns the modern ABC gangster rappers, proclaiming that even though their phone may be ringing, it’s just their mommy and not anyone looking for them to put in work.

Skepta notes that he has people out to kill him, though he’s not worried – he’s even encouraging them to try as he knows nothing’s going to come of it.

Skepta acknowledges that Young Lord is strapped with a weapon, most likely a gun, in the pocket of his Ksubi jeans. Ksubi is an Australian fashion label that specializes in denim jeans. Skepta explains that depending on the type of drug, him and his friends are cooking up or growing drugs in a designated drug house called the traphouse . Never disturb a baker when he’s mixing up the flour is a saying used between drug dealers when preparing drugs – the bakers are the dealers and the flour alludes to the drugs they’re ‘mixing’. Although illegal, the comparison to the honest trade of baking shows how cooking drugs is also a skill. The slang name flour enforces the baking theme, also it can also be used by cocaine-users as a code name for the drug.

Skepta explains that he is so preoccupied with his drug making priorities that he considers them more important than showing up to arrangements on time. It Aint Safe allows Skepta to communicate his opinion, that nowadays people only look into the trends, and not what they like and what is comfortable for them. The point is all people actually care about is the name, and not what they’re wearing, despite how ridiculous and uncomfortable it is. Skepta insists that labels are nothing to him, he doesn’t follow the trends, he makes them… a reason why he is the most prominent artist in the grime rap industry....
