Jessica Jackson HCM 320 5-1 Journal: Healthcare vs Sick Care

I can honestly say that my definition of healthcare is the same but a better understanding of what it means after watching the video. “Healthcare is the maintenance or improvement of health via the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, recovery, or cure of disease, illness, injury, and other physical and mental impairments in people.”(Wikipedia, 2021) After reviewing this definition and video, I would say that providing healthcare to a patient is more than just a medication on a prescription pad written by a provider but going the extra mile with your patient to figure out how to help prevent the reason for coming to the doctor. The video talks about taking that extra step to see if your patient can get food if they have air or heat in their homes, transportation issues, or unable to get their medications from the pharmacy. This type of care is needed in the community, especially rural health communities. The healthcare systems need to look at socioeconomics and how it can affect a person’s health. In addition, we need to make sure that our patients are aware of any resources out there to help them. For example, there needs to be a way of getting healthier food, help with rent or electric bills, affordable health insurance, and insurance for prescriptions. Finally, having a person in the medical office that can spend time with patients and teach them about a healthier lifestyle is essential. People should not choose between going to the doctor over having food in their house when they are sick. We need to focus more on working together between insurances, providers, and hospitals to figure out a better healthcare delivery system that can benefit the

patients and keep them healthy. I do think that technology will play a significant role in healthcare as we advance.
