Description

Meredith Feathers Jan. 31, 2022 Mythology Journal Entry 1 Beira, Queen of Winter represents a story of fertility. In the myth the storyline follows the changing seasons and the actions that take place during the different seasons. As opposed to the creation of a new being or goddess, Beira is said to be the mother of all gods and the goddess of Scotland, however, was not an immortal being like traditional gods and goddesses. Beira aged with the changing seasons but not to the point of perishing. To prevent her perish she drank the magic waters of the well of youth located on the green island of the west (265). She drank these waters at the beginning of every spring when its magic was most potent. As the months went on she aged faster than a normal human; Midsummer she aged into womanhood, by autumn her brows began to wrinkle and her beauty began to fade, and finally in winter she became an old withered hag (266). The is representation of a continuous cycle, renewing itself each year and also represents destruction, just not total destruction. Although Beira does not die, her body and beauty undergoes immense amounts of trauma and change including a missing eye at one point....
