Communication and Collaboration For the criminal justice system to be run effectively then each branch must be able to communicate and collaborate with other branches of the system. In order to have a properly operating system I will explain each type of communication and collaboration must happen for the system to run smoothly and effectively. Legal Searches When it comes down to legal searches then the law enforcement must work very closely so the process with go smoothly. There have been many cases that I know where the case has been dismissed due to the evidence that was collected was done so without the properly search warrant. The only time that a search warrant is not needed by a police officer is when he has probable causes or if he feels his/hers or the publics life is in danger. When it comes down to a probation officer doing a search a warrant is not necessary if it involved the probationer or his property. As far as it goes for the prison guards doing searches, they have every right because one an inmate enters jail, he gives that right of searches away. The only thing that must be made sure is that the warden is present when the searches are being conducted. Collaborate When a police officer is doing an investigation that involved an inmate then the office must go through the prison guard, mostly likely would be the chief to get the information. The prisons do keep records and logs of the conversations of every inmates' calls. Prison guards are always the ones to monitor the prison guards are able to conduct the warrantless searches that happen inside the prison. Presentence Report

The one who is most likely to conduct the investigation would be the probation officer. The officer will conduct the investigation by gathering information. He would collaborate with family, friends, financial agencies and employer. The officer must collaborate with the victim to get report any impacts the crime had financial, mentally, or physically. The officer must speak with the suspects health provider to see if there was any mental issue that may have cause him to commit the crime. This impacts interagency collaboration because it allows the officer to gather information for the prosecutor to show exactly what has happened in this case. Court Case In Estelle v. Gamble case communication and collaboration were seen to impact the case tremendous. The corrections department failed to aid Estelle in his time of need by collaborating with the other departments. Texas corrections failed to collaborate with the health department so that the inmates could receive healthcare accordingly. This is where the rights of inmates to receive healthcare came in. The three rights are the right to receive healthcare, the right to professional medical judgement, and the right to care that is ordered. The main priorities of the department are to maintain the welfare and safety of the inmates and the staff. Career Path I would say that after my findings regarding the differences in each branch the career path that is most in line with my communication and collaboration practices would be a probation officer. That is because I am wanting to become a psychologist and being a probation officer, they must conduct the pre-sentence reports. I believe that doing interview would be a positive outlook on my resume for my career.

Technology There is so much technology that each branch of the criminal justice system can access and use depending on the field they are working in. Each field is different and have different types of technology that is used for different scenario and cases. I will describe each field and the technology that they are able to access. Police Officer It will all depend on the size of town you live in and the police department. For those larger cities that have larger police departments, they will send a crime scene investigator to do all this investigation. The police officer will be the first one on the scene, it isn't their job to do a full-blown investigation of the crime scene. One type of technology that is available to police officers is a crime light. This is a flashlight that has different preset wavelength that is designed to detect hair, fibers, and body fluids at the crime scene. The responding crime scene investigator will have other equipment and tools that will be used during the investigation. The investigator will take several pictures of the scene and use shoe print lifting equipment to get any shoeprint to identify the size and type used by the suspect. Prison Guard When you are a visitor at any prison there will be a security procedure that you must follow to prevent contraband from entering. One technology equipment that the guard will use is a metal detector wand or a walk-through metal detector. There will be cameras that monitor everything going on in the visitation area including voice recording of the visitation. If you are to have a video visitation with the inmate, then that video is also recorded just as each phone call would be as well. If the inmate can only have video visitation then this eliminates all possibilities of the inmate getting contraband from their visitor. Most prisons have a body scanner that the

visitor must go through before they are allowed back into the visitation area especially if it is a contact visit. The Body scanner is being used because there is contraband that someone could bring in that is not a weapon so it will not be metal such as drugs or tobacco. Probation Officer Those on probation are put on a very strict procedure that they must follow once they are released from prison. The probation officer at any time she wants to do a search she is welcome to of the house of the probationer without a search warrant. This is because once they are released, they give up that right just as they do when they are in prison that right is taken away. If the individual is out on a high-risk case, they could be placed on an electronic device attached to their leg or ankle. Most of the time probation is for those that are non-violent crimes. Career Path After I have done my research on each of the ways of technology affect every criminal justice job, I would say that my path that I choose of being a Police Officer still interest me. I believe that the Police Officers are one of the ones to have the best use of every technology out there. One reason is because they are not only the ones to first book the criminal and gather the evidence, but mainly because they are the first ones to first encounter with the criminals and all the crime scenes. This would only make sense that they were the ones with the best technology in the criminal justice field.

Ethical and Professional Practice Each branch has their own ethical and professional practices that they must follow for their branch to run smoothly. Each branch will enter an oath when they are becoming in that

branch and they must follow that oath and standards. If one person does not follow those standards, then it could cause a breach in that part of the branch or the entire justice system. Standards The officer should not accept this as it would be conflict of interest and be going against his code of ethics that he sworn to when he came an officer. No officer should accept gifts as it could be used against them later. For instance, if the officer was to take the owners gift then he could use it against him if the owner is every facing the law. At the end of paragraph number four of the Police code of Ethics, it clearly states “never employing unnecessary force or violence and never accepting gratuities.” The code of ethics is a moral that the police officers live by everyday of their career, so they do not question everything that they do. These standards are put into place because there needs to be one standard that all the officers must follow, so there are not any behavior changes from one officer to the next. When this is done then this protects the department and each office from any type of charges of corruption. Decision Making The correction officers should use professional and ethical standards when it comes to turning Ray in for the contraband. There are systems put in place for situation such as this situation involving the correction officer and a friend inmate. One example of this would be, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Standards of Employee Conduct, state that “Employees will avoid situations that involve conflicts of interest with their employment” (U.S. Department of Justice, 2013) Even though the officer knows the inmate and they went to school together, he still had a job he must do, and he should not give any type of special treatment. The officer that is tending to his friend who is now an inmate is a conflict of interest and would fit in this

7

situation. If the officer allows the inmate to keep his contraband, there will be punishment to the officer. If the officer does his job correctly and turns the inmate in for the contraband, he will more than likely lose that friendship that he has with Ray but it will also show that he has a job and Ray should respect it no matter the circumstances. Principle For a police officer offer to conduct an ethical and legal search of a home then the police officers must have probable cause in order to do any type of search. The 4th amendment does not apply to probationers since being on probation is another type of jail sentence and that right of being searched is given up. Any person who is on probation agrees to be searched at any given time when they are put onto probation. If a police officer wants to search the home of someone on probation, then they must have a search warrant before they do the search of the home. Career Path After I have finished the research for this assignment, I do believe I have some controversy on the branch that I will end up choosing. After I have did all the research and analyzing I still feel like I would like to go into the branch of law enforcement. I would say that I would like to go into the professional practice of a police officer.

Career Revision After all the information that I have gotten from this investigation of the three branches of the criminal justice system my decision still stays the same. I still feel that I am going to follow the original career path of becoming a Police Officer.
