Description

“Just along for the ride”

The short story “Just along for the ride” was published in “people around you from 1972, written by Dennis Kurumada. The story is about 5 boys (Dick who is driving the car, Phil on the passenger seat and Ried, Steve and the first person narrator in the back) who are out on a night cruise, when they decide to make some “fun” by hitting a random pedestrian. This happens to be a horrifying mistake, as they realize that the victim actually is one of their friends (Ken Benjamin). The first person narrator then decides to visit Ken Benjamin’s mother, to tell her about the accident. The story ends here and it is up to us, what happens next. The story can be read in a single setting. It has no exposition it starts in the middle of the action, where the five boys are sitting in the car. We have no prior information other than they are sitting in the car and are bored. Almost all the story takes place in the car, except when the first person narrator is back at his house. The story is focused on the five persons in the car, but the main characters is Dick and the first person narrator, because there is a conflict between them when they hit the pedestrian, Ken Benjamin. Dick wants to continue because of the risk of getting court and accused for manslaughter, and the narrator wants to stop because he know Ken Benjamin. This happens from line 60 – 67: "Dick! Stop! I know that guy! Dick, will ya stop?" He didn't hear me. "Stop the car! He's my friend! Shut up, you jerk! You want us to get nailed for manslaughter?"

The Story is easy to read and it is build up in two Cullum’s. There is no structure in the text out of the norm. The story also contains some slang language as for an example: “Dick will ya stop?”

Theme: It’s all about identity, and how you behave along with your friends. The narrator is in the start very tough and willing to do anything, but when he finds out who the victim is, he turns over to the thoughtful and caring person.

Message When you have done something wrong, you need to be honest about it and face the consequences, because if not, it could turn out to be even more bad for yourself.

Conclusion I can conclude that you need to choose your friends with dedication, otherwise it could end out in something bad. I can conclude that you need to face your mistake’s or the fact that you might not get over it....
