The Kinsey Film was an emotional roller coaster that consisted of ups, downs, laughs, sadness, confusion, and everything in between. This film had many instances where I was caught off guard and looked around the room at my fellow classmates to see if they were seeing the same thing I was. Something that I initially noticed was the lack of sexual education in the time period that this film was placed in. there were numerous examples of the lack of sexual education amongst the general public presented in this movie but I will list the ones that I found most interesting. Firstly, the idea that too much masturbation leads to blindness and insanity. This assertion that is made was very interesting to me because obviously there was no science to back up this claim. So, why would it be a common saying? My guess is that spreading this propaganda saying that masturbation leads to these negative side effects will make it so that the only way to achieve pleasure was from sex. During the time period in which this film is placed in in order to have sex you “must” be married. The reason I believe this false information was spread was to push marriage onto younger adults. Secondly, the idea that “oral sex leads to infertility” being claimed by a couple that seek Kinsey’s help. This ties into the last assertion as well in that since sex was only allowed if you were married to you partner and masturbation “makes you blind and insane” the only other way a non-married person would achieve sexual pleasure is oral sex. Again, this idea of no oral sex will further push couples to get married. I believe this push to get couples to get married is an awful idea. The reason I believe this is such a poor idea is because not accepting as a society that pre-marital sex is okay will simply just force people into marriages just so they can have sex. I would like to touch on Kinsey being bi-sexual. This is something that I completely

expected because I could tell by the things he was doing that he had an interest in men. For example, when he was showing the man how to use a shovel in the garden he was being very touchy feely with him. Something that did really catch me off guard was Kinsey’s wife’s reaction to his interest in men. Initially she was sad and hurt that he had a sexual encounter with a man, but she continued to stay with Kinsey. This surprised me because I expected her to leave Kinsey. Additionally, something that really shocked me was the guy that had sex with Kinsey also had sex with Mac. I was utterly dumbfounded when this happened and did not expect this at all. This love triangle was something that continued for a period of time which was shocking to me considering the time frame this movie was place in. the idea of an open relationship was not something that was common at all in that time period. This film really shows a progression of Kinsey that I found very interesting. In the beginning of the film his ideas where taken as sinful and ridiculous. By the middle of the film he had a large following and huge support from the public. Near the end Kinsey did lose a majority of his status, many people viewed the idea of sexual research as negative. Something that I did notice was that when Kinsey released his first book about men’s sexual behaviors everyone liked Kinsey, but once he released a book regarding women’s sexual behavior the public opinion of Kinsey changed drastically. This is something that is very interesting because even to this day people still find it easier to talk about male sexual behavior but are more reluctant to hear about women’s. In conclusion, this movie was very enjoyable and had many plot twists and character developmental sections that really kept my interest. Additionally, I also learned about how far we have came as a society in spreading information about our sexual selves. While I do not believe we are in the perfect place in regards to sexual education I do believe that we have made a

massive leap forward since the time in which this movie is placed. This movie is not something I would have watched on my own but I am very glad this is something that we watched in class....
