Foreigners in their Own Land 1. What drew Anglo-Americans westward from the early 1800s? They were driven by believing in a god given right to expand across the continent.

2. When did the first Anglo settlers enter northern Mexico, Tejas? They entered northern Mexico in 1821. Why did the Mexican government invite Anglo-Americans to settle in Tejas? What were settlers required to do? The Mexican government invited the Anglo-American to settle in Tejas because he wanted them to repopulate the land. The settlers were required to be Catholic and pledge allegiance to the Mexican Flag.

3. Who was Stephen Austin? Stephen Austin was a young business man from Virginia.

4. What were the racial beliefs of the first 300 Anglo settlers in Tejas? They wanted to turn what they thought was just wilderness into a cotton growing part of the United States. They wanted Texas to be a slave holding society and they felt superior to everyone.

5. Who was Juan Seguin, and how did he identify himself? Juan Seguin was a 3rd generation Tejano and he identified himself as someone else other than a mexicano, he identified himself as a Mexican American. 6. How did Anglo Texans and Mexican Texans (Tejanos) react to Mexico’s president, Antonio Lopez Santa Anna, dissolving congress in 1834 and becoming a dictator? They both united in opposition and rose in open rebellion.

7. What happened at the Battle of El Alamo? How was Seguin involved? All the defenders of the Alamo were killed and Seguin had to bury their ashes.

8. What happened at the Battle at San Jacinto? Seguin gathered a company of Tejanos and joined Sam Houston’s Army at the Battle at San Jacinto. The Mexican Army was taken by surprise, the battle only lasted 18 minutes and Santa Anna surrendered Texas to the army of Houston.

9. What issues did Tejanos (even those who fought with Anglos in the Texas Revolution against Mexico) face during the early years of the Republic of Texas? The Tejanos faced issues such as being randomly murdered, being pushed off their land by squatters, and people taking their cattle.

10. What happened to Juan Seguin after the Revolution? What does his experience demonstrate about the divide between Anglo Texans and people of Mexican descent? Juan Seguin was forced to leave Texas because his Anglo allies turned against him and he had no authority and no protection to protect any Mexicans from being assaulted. His experience demonstrated that the Anglo Texans didn't see people with Mexican descent as equals.

11. As someone who currently lives in the San Antonio area, did you find any of the information you learned in this documentary surprising? If you attended elementary/middle/high school in Texas, what do you remember about how you were taught Texas history? Was there anything in this doc that differed from the stories you may have learned about the Alamo, the Texas independence movement, or the experiences of Tejanos and Anglos in the 1800s? [There's no right answer to these questions! I just want to know your general thoughts.] As someone who’s lived in Texas their whole life I did not find anything in this documentary surprising. I did attend most of my grade school years in Texas, about 95%. In school they like to sugar coat everything in History and only tell us one side of the story. For example, they don’t tell us about Juan Seguin or much about the Battle of San Jacinto, they just teach us about what's going to be on a STAAR test or State test....
