Description

Exam Revision Questions 1. Discuss reasons for selection of the depth at which the velocity measurement is made when a single point measurement technique is employed. Include in your discussion potential sources of systematic error which may invalidate the reason.

2. Briefly discuss the need for extrapolation of a rating curve at a gauging station. Include in your discussion an overview of how you would achieve the necessary extrapolation.

2. Discharge calculation (Lecture 4) Calculate the flow across the River Rhine from the data given below. A propeller current metre was used to measure velocity at 9 sections across the river. The calibration data for the propeller is given in Table 1. The field measurements are given in Table 2. Measurements were taken at each section using the 3 point method. The propeller was placed at 0.2d, 0.6d and 0.8d.

QUESTION 3. The University of New South Wales operated a gauging station on the Eastern Creek Catchment in Sydney for a period of time in the 60's and 70's. The data for a number of gauging events is shown in Table 1. a. Plot a stage-discharge curve for the station and comment on your results. b. The highest gauging observed at this station is considerably below the highest recorded flood. Extend the stage-discharge curve to a height of 4.2m using a loglog plot. c. Stages were recorded at the peaks of three stream rises of 1.2m, 2.3m and 4.2m. Estimate the flood discharge based upon your stage discharge relationship. Give an estimate of the accuracy of these predictions....
