Research Questions and Research Design

Research Question = a clear, focused, concise, complex and arguable question around which you centre your research. Types of Research Question: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Hypothesis generating- what factors predict? Hypothesis testing- what is the relationship…? Parameter estimation- what is the prevalence of? Confirmatory study- replication of study design

Making it Specific:     

Population- who are you interested in? Intervention- what experimental design are you using? Comparison/Control Group- who are you comparing your population to? Outcome of Interest- what do you intend to accomplish/measure/improve? Time- is the study happening at one time or at multiple time points?

Operationalising Variables = turning an abstract concept into a measurable variable. Define the variable, what scale can measure this and is it the IV or DV.

Hypothesis Development:     

Insight into research question Testable and measurable by the proposed experiment Logical in relation to the current literature Directional- clear rationale needed (there will be a positive correlation…) Non-directional- limited knowledge/inconsistency (there will be an association…)

Identify Before Starting Analysis: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

IV (variable type continuous/categorical) DV (variable type- continuous/categorical) Operationalised Confounding variables Hypotheses based on literature

ANOVA = differences between groups. 1 categorical IV with a minimum of 3 levels (one-way ANOVA), 2 or more categorical IV’s with a minimum of 2 levels (two-way ANOVA).

Multiple Regression = predictors of an outcome. 2 or more continuous IV’s predicting scores on a continuous DV (multiple regression). Can include categorical IV’s if they have no more than two levels e.g. gender as it’s binary....
