9-8-15 AMERICAN CINEMA MOVIE: THE STUDIO SYSTEM  Studios controlled everything (factory-like)  Movies are a business & art  Paramount is one of most successful studios  The Golden Age  1930s – 1940s  The Famous Players Company (started by head of Paramount – Adolf Zucker)  Studio Boss is the head of the system  Studios internationalized their systems after the great war  The big studios also owned their own theater chains to show their movies in  In 1948 the government decreed that the big studios had to sell their theaters and were only allowed to produce and distribute movies  Movie studios were worried when TV became popular  Studios started renting out their space to independent companies to make their own movies  Exclusivity is what made the studio system work  UA = united artists  Some studios began producing TV shows to make up for movie profit losses  Paramount was the first movie studio to be bought by a conglomerate = Gulf and Western Company...
