Description

Social Information Processing Theory (SIP) Socio-psychological tradition (WVI) • Relationship development theory • How we communicate when we develop relationships online

A liquid analogy: • Face to Face vs. Online Communication (CMC- Computer Mediated Communication) • A sip (CMC) vs. a gulp (FTF) • Quanitity and Quality of communication is the same • Sip- sipping a drink with a straw, slowly, takes time • Gulp- shotgunning a drink, happens quickly, face to face with nonverbal A. Assumption- relationships grow only to the extent that people first gain information and then form impressions about the person who disclosed the information • Self disclosure • Get impression from the people B. Two features of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) 1. Verbal cues- only have verbal cues to rely on, in face to face we rely on nonverbal cues and feelings. In CMC we don’t have that option, verbal cues have a lot more weight and emphases 2. Extended time- takes longer • Closely related to: Social Penetration and Uncertainty reduction theories Interpersonal Information —> Impression format —> Relationship development

C. Replacement of nonverbal cues- words alone can carry the weight of the nonverbal communication 1. CMC = Verbal-only medium vs. FTF = multiple channels • Assumes- CMC can develop relationships using words alone can develop and make satisfying relationships just as much as FTF 2. Research findings: FTF = CMC for conveying information • FTF: Big bandwidth (both verbally and nonverbal) • Only one difference- CMC just takes longer • time is a huge factor in this theory • It takes about 4x as long through CMC vs. FTF • CMC: 40 minute convo vs. FTF: 10 minute 3. Two other temporal (time) factors that contribute to intimacy 1. Anticipated future interaction 2. Chronemic cues (time)- how people use time when we interact with other people • We filter out all nonverbal in CMC except time, cannot be filtered out • Time = implications: what time you get a message (2 pm vs 2 am), D. Hyperpersonal Perspective • Explains CMC can surprise the quality of relational communication rather than FTF 1. Selective self-presentation: sender gets to pick and decide what information we want to communicate to other people about ourselves; create an image we want to express to the receiver 2. Over attribution of similarity: receiver assumes sender is similar to them as well; halo effect- assuming their are more positive attributes; 3. Asynchronous: channel 4. Self-fulfilling prophecy: feedback through similarity; which means you will like them- similarity = likingness

Critique • Explanation of the data; yes it explains that we will be closer through people in CMC • Prediction of future events; relationships online take longer, can be just as close • Simplicity; very simple • Hypotheses that can be tested; FTF vs. CMC can be seen and tested • Practical utility; yes with all the technology this theory is important • Quantitative Research; can be tested
