Music Therapy-Jessica Nagel What is music therapy -Music therapy is the clinical evidence based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional signal -Using music to work towards non music goals -works for pre school -broad spectrum of populations, toddlers with downs to 65 yo with depression Who is a Music Therapist -completed approved music therapy program -competent in guitar piano voice -training in counseling techniques, classroom management, ethics , considerations for sensitive populations etc. -evidence based practice -4 semesters of practical with various populations -6 month clinical internship (900+) hours -board certification exam and continuing education -licensure in a few states- pending in MN -hospice, hospitals, schools with children, nursing homes (broad spectrum of places employable) -main part of education is 4 semesters of practicum, spend time working with music therapist shadowing in community -often followed by 6 month unpaid internship, build rapport in community/population -get experience with lots of different populations Music Theory vs Music Medicine -Music therapy -interactive with mt-bc -receptive and active music making (listening to music vs making music with client if possible) -individualized -treatment process -Therapeutic Music/Music Medicine=iPod playlist Clinical Experience -the family partnership: community based non profit -birth-5 years developmental goals -collaborate with ot, slap, saw, teachers -parent support groups- parent education, reunification

-services provided in culturally supportive context -Fraser academy: special Ed k-5 charter school -social skills, behavioral goals, emotional regulation -developmental goals, communication, executive functioning -developed MT program U of M round 2 -interest in music therapy with urban under served/at risk families experiencing chronic poverty/homelessness -Music Therapy work with kids and moms at homeless shelter in N Mpls -CBT approach -reduce stress and anxiety (a lot of time parents/moms in homeless shelter experience high levels of stress and fight or flight all the time, use music therapy to manage stress and anxiety) -play music to see response both physically and psychologically in both moms and children -promote positive coping skills -the family partnership (round 2) My (Ms. Nagel’s) Treatment Process -referral -assessment (comprehensive) -communication, motor, social emotional, cognitive, sensory -treatment –individualized goals and objectives -reassessment evaluation -termination- especially important to prep children for this transition -involving kids in music process and observing them for movement, fine motor controls, participation, interest, get kids to mimic playing instruments like drum or maracas -observe what skills kids have to follow directions precisely e.g. Shake maracas high or low, side to side etc. -receptive communication: see if kids can follow along playing songs, following directions, impulse control (in many groups she works with kids do not have impulse control, but music is highly motivating so kids follow directions and are engaged, want to keep playing and participating) -get kids to work together (kids from homes who have been victims of abuse, see abuse in home or community, see a lot of aggressive behavior that is response to trauma in life, getting them to work together like doing gentle touches, shaking hands, playing drums together) -end with relaxation piece, something sensory like passing around baby lotion to put on hands, take a deep breath of good smell to help relax out of flight or flight state
