REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER ___________

Description of Procedure Have nurse stand at the side of the bed facing the client. Using both hands, feel for the fetal par lying in the fundus, determine fetal back, determine what fetal part is lying above the inlet or lower abdomen, determine the degree of flexion of fetal head.

Indications The abdominal examination method of Leopolds Maneuvers is a way to determine the position of a fetus inside the uterus by touching the abdomen by hands. This method is expected to enable expectant mothers to perceive the fetal position, and stimulate the awareness of child presence.

Interpretation of Findings Determines position of the fetus Determines presentation of the fetus Assessment of the shape of the maternal pelvis can indicate whether delivery is going to be complicated, or whether C-section is necessary Also used to estimate term fetal weight

Potential Complications There are virtually no side effects or complications of the Leopold Methods. A skilled nurse should execute the procedure and care should be taken not to disturb the fetus in an excessive manner

CONSIDERATIONS

Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Leopold Maneuvers cannot be performed with a full bladder at all, therefore instruct the patient to empty the bladder. Privacy of the patient should be another top priority, therefore drape properly. Explain the whole procedure to the patient. Palms should be used to palpate instead of fingers.

Client Education Have pt. empty bladder. This will promote comfort and allows for more productive palpation because fetal contour will not be obsured by a distended bladder. Explain procedures to gain pt's cooperation

Nursing Interventions - Ausculate the FHR, post-maneuvers to assess the fetal tolerance to the procedure. - Document the findings from the maneuvers
