Subject: Maths Time: 9-10

Class: Year 5

NC/CGFS/PNS Links:  Multiply numbers up to 4 digits by a one- or two-digit number using a formal written method, including long multiplication for two-digit numbers.

My teaching target appropriate to this lesson:

 Can I multiply 2 digit numbers together using the grid method? Learning Intentions:  To understand how to use the grid method and where to place each number.  To be able to multiply high numbers. Success Criteria:

 

To know all multiples up to 10. To be able to do basic addition and multiplication.

Implications From Previous Learning / Assessment:  Some pupils put the multiplication answers in the wrong box.  Some couldn’t do basic addition and multiplication. Possible Misconceptions:  Not knowing how many 0 to add at the end of a number when multiplying by 10’s. Time 15 mins

Time

Introduction & Teaching Input  Go through how to use the grid method.  Get children to give you 2 digit numbers and do some examples.  Get the children to answer as you go along.

Key Questions and Teaching Points  Only move onto questions when the children understand how to use the grid method.

Development / Pupils’ Activities:  Give out worksheet and answer all questions.  Go around and see if the children need help.  When complete, hand out worksheet no2.  Complete all questions. Differentiation:  Higher ability pupils can try using higher numbers, still using the grid method.  Lower ability can use lower numbers such as 22 X 41. Plenary:

 Go through answers and find out where children went wrong.  AFL sheet. Scaffolding and the role of adults:  Only me in the room with 6 children so no additional support needed.  Class teacher and TA in classroom. Classroom Management:  Manage behaviour of small group by one person talking at a time with ‘hands up’ policy. Resources Needed:  2X worksheet  Glue – to stick in sheet  Whiteboard and pen Health and Safety:  Be careful with glue  All children sitting down at all tiems.

Assessment: 

Show example exam style question and see who can answer.

Extension/Further Activities:  Write 3 digit multiplied by 2 digit questions on board for those who have finished and go through grid method....
