Summary

Year 4 lesson plan to create your own volcano and how they work....

Description

Year: 4

Class Teacher: LMcG

Subject: Science / History / Art

Term: 6

Week: 1

National Curriculum (2013) links  Asking relevant questions and using different types of scientific enquiries to answer them (Science NC).  Reporting on findings from enquiries, including oral and written explanations, displays or presentations of results and conclusions (Science NC).  Describe and understand key aspects of: physical geography, including: volcanoes and earthquakes (Geography NC).  Explore the Romans (History NC).  Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences (Art and Design NC).  To improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including painting (Art and Design NC). Day: Wednesday 09/05/21 LO: Build a volcano and create a mini volcano.

Read Escape from Pompeii to the children and then discuss the book.

Create a volcano as part of a small group. Explain we will be creating a volcano and on Friday we will be completing an experiment to learn about how volcanos work. Watch this video before they begin creating the volcano (only watch the first 40seconds of the video as this is the making of the volcano) : https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/how-to-make-a-volcano.html Split the children into mixed ability groups (30 children – 10 groups of 3 children). Have two sheets of A3 card, 3 paint brushes and a variety of paint available for each group. Tell the children we will be painting the volcano today and building it on Friday once the paint has dried. If the children have additional time before the end of the lesson, give them all a template to create their own volcano. This will allow them to use their creativity to decorate their own volcano independently and after they have coloured it they can then cut it out and make it 3D.

Resources/ICT Escape from Pompeii by Christina Balit book. To create volcano:  20 sheets of A3 card (2 per group)  Paint  Paint brushes  Painting trays To make your own volcano:  Template of volcano  Colouring pencils  Scissors  Sellotape Assessment:

They will be in groups of mixed ability children to support each other throughout the activity.

Plenary: Ask they think will happen with the volcano on Friday? Discuss what do they think we will add

Day: Friday 11/05/21 LO: Learn how to make a volcano.

Outdoor learning

Before the lesson watch this video to understand the experiment (only watch the first 53seconds of the video as the ending will ruin the children’s predictions) : https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/how-to-make-a-volcano.html Get the children to build their volcano – go through step by step how to do so, i.e. shown in the video. - First cut a hole at the top of the page in the middle for the bottle lid to fit through, repeat this for both sheets. - Then tape the two sheets in a position around the bottle which gives it the shape of a volcano. Cut around the bottom if necessary to create shape. Go outside and have the experiment set up as described below (this is how to set up the experiment for one group, repeat this for each group). [Measures are double shown in video  as it demonstrated better results]. Each group brings their volcano outside. - Mix two tbsps of bicarbonate soda and washing-up liquid into a cup, then add four tbsps water into another cup and get the children to mix this together in one cup (have this set up in two cups so the children can add it together and mix). - Then pour this mixture into the bottle. - Ask the children what they think will happen when we add the vinegar and food colouring mixture. Explain they will have to stand back once the last mixture is added. - In a separate cup mix one tbsp of food colouring with half a cup of vinegar (DO NOT MIX THE VINEGAR AND BICARBONATE SODA UNTIL YOU ARE READY FOR THE ERUPTION). - Eruption time!.... get the children to pour the vinegar/food colouring mixture into the volcano and observe. Discuss the result of the experiment - A chemical reaction between vinegar and baking soda creates a gas called carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is the same type of gas used to make the carbonation in fizzy drinks. What happens if you shake up a soda? The gas gets very excited and tries to spread out. There is not enough room in the bottle for the gas to spread out so it leaves through the opening very quickly, causing an eruption!

Resources/ICT 

10 plastic bottles (1 per group) 10 beakers/cups 10 jugs 10 spoons Washing up liquid Vinegar Water Food dye Baking soda

Assessment: Support will be available for all children and they will be in groups of mixed ability children to support each other throughout the activity.
