Diary entry of a child from the industrial revolution ...

Description

12/02/1830 Dear diary Am so tired from yesterday I can hardly write at all and my legs and arms ache so much. Mother is still ill and she needs someone to be at home to look after her. It was a long tiring walk uphill on Redhill Street in the snow. I don't have the proper shoes to wear in the snow. I wish I was a rich boy and my family is rich so that we can afford everything. Then when we took the left turn to get the mill's front entrance. I was the eye-rolling scene it is so boring working 13 hours a day then you have that whickered overlooker, Mrs Brown.

I've been working for the last 2 days but in that time I've seen a young boy called Albert Windsor got his finger cut off. It was horrid! There are many children in the mill. I was surprised but the children here work such long hours for so little, and yet they show up each day ready to work. In the afternoons many of us children get a 30 minutes lunch break. After the break, we feel a bit sleepy as we all have woken up by Mrs Brown when she whips our back so that we don't sleep instead of doing work. Today was so boring I have to get through 500 cloths took doing the same old job on my third day picking out stupid broken threads. At 7:00 pm it finished work but today was a day off from school as it was Sunday

When I got home it was very cold outside. When I came through the front door this evening and Mum told me to go bed to rest. But I wouldn't, not until I'd cleaned away the dirt - the fluff that still stuck to me. Afterwards, I ate some food same old stew I must have asleep on the table because I awoke to find Father shaking my

shoulder I was terrified. But it was only Father, waking me for me the go to bed. Those big machines still haunt me the noise is still playing in my ears. Good night

13/02/1830 Dear diary

It is so cold I am freezing my hands are frozen. It is so hard for me to write. Today is my birthday and I am Turing 10 years old. Today I did the same old boring walk to the mill. Mrs Brown wiped me as I was 2 minutes late. I felt very upset today as no one in my family wished me a happy birthday.

When I got to the factory Mrs Brown stormed into our room to order us outside to wash our hands using the outside water pump. So that our dirty hands, however, it was so cold that the water formed little ice icicles at the end of the pump. All of the kids who work here were stood huddled together in a line, trying to stay close to stay warm. I tried to look for my sister, Beatrice as boys and girls are separated at all times. We haven't seen each other since we entered this place.

Soon after we were sent to the bustling workroom, where I was ordered to unpick threads. The material is so tough and scratchy that my fingers were blistered. The pain was so incredible that I wanted to cry, but I didn't dare. If Mrs Brown catches somebody crying she beats them with the cane.

When I got home I was surprised with some good dinner I didn't want to go to school today. I ate some yummy bread with butter it was so yummy. Then I retired to go to bed as I was so tired and cold.

14/02/1830 Dear diary

I woke up in our overcrowded bed. It is too cold. It is extremely difficult to see the page; I am holding this diary up to the window so that I can see the light from the reflection of the moon that how early I woke up this morning. Today will be miserable as any other day may it could be worse.

Breakfast was water and a small piece of bread left over from last night. I can tell it was left over because it was extremely tough to bite. Soon after Beatrice and I rushed to the workroom I have to pick the threads again. To think that we do this all day, every day, for 6d a week. Today I went to school after 2 days Mrs Honey was here today we did some reading we read a book about Shakespeare it took the whole 2 hour school day to read 5 chapters it was so boring.

When I got home Dinner was small piles of stale crusty bread were on the table tops and bowls of cold gruel were slammed down before us. When will this end? I

feel weak and tired. Sometimes I wish I could eat better food. I had better get some rest.
