Literary Analysis Essay of The Necklace by Guy De Maupassant Sometimes they think money is everything they need in our life but at the end noticed that it is only a complement. In The Necklace by Guy De Maupassant they see the direct characterization in Mathilde that it is related to greediness and the wish of power over the money to present a good lesson. The main point of this short story is about Mathilde’s dream of being rich and having the best life she can. However, Mathilde realized that she should have not borrowed the necklace. After analyzing the story they can argument about what this essay was made.

In the short story Guy the Maupassant expresses Mathilde’s characterization that “She suffers ceaselessly, feeling herself born for all the delicacies and all the luxuries.” It talks about how she suffers because Mathilde wants the life of rich and power but it’s not possible. “She would so have liked to please, to be envied, to be charming, to be sought after.” That’s another sentence that we can see how she is as a character in the short story, she wants all for her and the screw the others next to her. Then her greediness made her husband buy her a dress instead of buying the hunting rifle he was working for a long time to buy. Mathilde realized that she should have not borrowed the necklace.

In the short story there is a point where Mathilde realized she should have not borrowed the necklace. “She sat waiting on a chair in her ball dress, without strength to go to bed, overwhelmed, without fire, without thought.” At this point she noticed that it was a bad idea to have borrowed the necklace because now she needs to buy one to give it back and don’t have the money to replace it. “They dismissed their servant; they changed their lodgings; they rented a garret under the roof. She came to know what heavy housework meant and the odious cares of the kitchen. She washed the dishes, using her rosy nails on the greasy pots and pans.” In these three sentences says a lot of information that she had to change to pay the bill of the necklace she lost just to look rich for a night. Here denotates how much she would regret to have borrowed that necklace. “She had become the woman of impoverished households strong and hard and rough.” She spent ten years to pay everything and for just one night she lost ten years and the

wish of being rich like she dreamed about. After this short story they can notice some lessons for real life.

The lesson of this essay it could be seen in a lot of ways. Sometimes people of the middle class wish that they could belong to the high class because they think it makes them happier. However when they face the real circumstances happens the same that Mathilde passed they lose almost everything a end up being from the low class. The first lesson is be happy with what you have and what you can afford don’t try to be someone you can not be. Another lesson this story gives is that if a person does not have the money for a certain object not to borrow it from someone because if something happens like happened to Mathilde you would have to pay it and money would not be there ready. Basically be grateful of what you have and you don’t have some major necessities like starving or having a very rough life....
