GUY DE MAUPASSANT The Jewelry

Title: The False Gems

“The Jewelry” is a story that takes place in Paris and talks about two main characters, M. Lantin, who is the chief clerk at the office of Minister of Interior, and his wife, who remains nameless throughout the story. The story begins by telling us how M. Lantin meet his wife at the house of the office-superintendent, and how he immediately fell in love with this young innocent girl. The story's plot is very interesting and can be thought of as two different stories combined into one. The writer first walks us through the six years of happiness they lived together and clearly notes M. Lantin's wife's passion for theatres and fake jewelry. She was a good housewife who maintained her household very well and provided her husband with a luxurious life style. He really loved her and they have a wonderful marriage. The only things that bother him are his wife's fascination with fake jewels and her love of the theatre. Even though he really loves his wife more and more, after a time, he begs off going to the theatre with her. He tells her that he does not like the fake jewels, but she wears them anyway, saying that she can't help it, she likes them. On one cold winter night, his wife went to the opera and came back home freezing, she had a bad cough and died eight days later from pneumonia. M. Lantin was heartbroken and spent endless nights remembering his good wife. He wouldn't touch or change any of her belongings as they reminded him of her. The story could have ended here and would have made a sad ending; however the writer goes on describing the change in M. Lantin's life. The author explains to us that M. Lantin was unable to continue living comfortably on his income. I found this very odd since his wife was able to manage the household for both of them and that they lived a very luxurious life. This was the first warning sign that struck me as a reader and got me to think more about M. Lantin's wife. The part that interests me the most was the "one morning that he happened to find himself without a cent in his pocket and (that he had to wait) a whole week before he could draw his monthly salary”. This clearly shows the reader that the wife had some kind of income coming in besides the income from M. Lantin's. In need of money, M. Lantin decides to sell his wife’s jewels and shamefully takes them to a merchant who tells him that the jewels are real and very valuable. To his surprise the jeweller

tells him that the necklace is worth between twelve and fifteen thousand francs. This came as a huge shock. M. Lantin is shocked when he learns that the jewels were in fact real, he does not know how his wife could have afforded to buy them, he did not buy them, and so he realizes that she must have had a lover who bought them for her. Confused by the discovery of his wife's infidelity, he determines to find a virtuous woman if he marries again. M. Lantin finds a woman he wants to marry. He chooses a woman that is without question, very virtuous and will be totally faithful to him. They marry, and his wife is a model of virtue, and M. Lantin finds that he is miserable.
