Lost Youth Reflection Paper This health and safety video focuses on the stories of four teens who get injured at work. The teens, John, Jennifer, Michael and Nick all have different stories on how they got injured, but they all have one thing in common, all their situations could’ve been easily avoided. Throughout the video they explain their accidents and how it will affect them forever, bringing awareness to other young workers today. Now, why is it that young workers are specifically at risk compared to the rest? This paper will cover the reasons focussing on these teenagers circumstances and how they all tie into each other with common themes that are related to each other. But first a brief explanation on each of their accidents; John broke his back in a forklift accident at only 16, Jennifer being 19 lost three fingers that got caught in equipment working in a pizzeria, Michael being 18 lost his leg in a sawmill, and Nick became paralized when crushed by lumber at the age of 19. Now what are some of the common issues all related to them? Well firstly these kids are inexperienced. The mother of John stated what her son was telling her which she stated “I may be the youngest here, and they don't usually hire 16 year olds.. There's a danger when you’re tired you misjudge, but I can handle it im tough, hurry, hurry, hurry.” Young workers tend to feel rushed and not ask for help or ask questions because they want to have the impression that they

2 are qualified and capable of doing their job. But the result in them not speaking up can lead to some catastrophic accidents. Secondly, is enthusiasm. Young workers don’t want to disappoint their boss especially if it's one of their first jobs. The fear of appearing unqualified is ingrained in our minds because everybody wants to seem capable and skilled enough for the job, but with that being said, young workers tend to not ask questions for help which can lead to catastrophic accidents. Jennifer was 19 when she was working at a pizzeria where she lost three fingers that got caught in equipment. In the video she states that there was dough stuck on the roller and was going to clean it which is how her fingers got caught. In this situation her employer should have notified her on how to properly clean the machine or she could have asked someone for help to avoid this accident. Lastly is working alone. When receiving little supervision and training young workers can cause accidents when doing tasks with equipment they're not that familiar with. If all of these teens had proper supervision they’re accidents could have been avoided. Young workers are often unaware of their rights and responsibilities, especially if they are new at their job and if they are by themselves as well they can do things not only improperly but unsafely as well. All these issues cause incidents to occur in the workplace which can easily be avoided. The culmination of all given themes; inexperience, enthusiasm, and working alone can lead to devastating accidents and can affect the lives of many young people forever, such as the four teens in the video. “Lost Youth” is a good awareness video that young workers should watch so they can be informed of an unsafe workplace, millions of young teens are in potential danger when they first start working.
