Learning Portfolio A2 Textbook questions: Question 1:

Example 1: Back in the day when I was in high school, I oriented myself to study at the International School of Business because I wanted to be a successful entrepreneur as well as I did not fit in with other majors such as technology or engineering. Unfortunately, my parents did not have the same thought as me. As a result, they did not allow me to study at this school and forced me to pursue another career path as a doctor. The reason why my parents did this was that they had a harsh prejudice towards business because they believed that jobs relating to the business were shady and unreliable, they cast doubt on me that I will not be successful in business. Moreover, they loved to see me doing jobs that are highly regarded by society as teachers or doctors. Having been furious with my parents’ decision, I chose to sit down and had a serious conversation with my parents about my orientation. I told them my career path and my strong points to study economics. I also proved to my parents that other majors were not suitable for me. As a result, my parents allowed me to pursue this academic path.

Example 2: My old friends and I decided to organize a party to celebrate our 7-year friendship. We were so exhilarating about this party that we already planned it up two weeks earlier. We talked for hours about the theme, the concept, and the decoration for the party. We also considered the budget for the party, and we found that we had enough money to pay even for a lavish party. At this point, I thought everything was perfect and under control, but the conflict between my friends and me started to happen after we picked the location. They chose a fancy place in district 1 to hold the party; however, that place is a formal place that I hold a ceremony for my club, so I knew the actual quality of this place. After I told them about how worse the service and the quality of this place, they started a serious argument against me saying that I just made up these words to tarnish the reputation of this place. I completely understood why they reacted like that because this is the first time they heard about this as well as they just read the virtual reviews on the Internet without any experience. After all the quarrel, I started a group call on Messenger and told them why we should change the location by showing them some evidence throughout my experience. They finally believed in me and decided to choose another place to celebrate the party.

Question 2:

For ages, we have heard about the terms “The customer is king” or “The customer is always right” or “The customer is in control.” All of these terms are used interchangeably to emphasize the importance of customers showing that they have the right to control all of the facets which could affect their interests. As a customer, I can feel partly controllable for what I have purchased. This is because whenever I go shopping, I always have the right to check the quality and the condition of the products whether they are in good shape or not until I decide to buy them. Moreover, I also have a chance to test the products to see if they are suitable for me and be entitled to return the products and get a refund if they do not reach my satisfaction as salespeople said. However, there are still many aspects that I could not manage. To illustrate, when I buy a product, all of the information about the product is given by the salesperson. I do not know whether this information is accurate or I am being manipulated by the false information given by the salesperson to force me to buy their products. Nevertheless, when it comes to the price, the salesperson offers me a reasonable price, I always wonder if I get a good bargain or I fall for a scam because I am unable to verify the origin price or the manufacturer of the product. All of the examples above show that as a customer, I could be in control of some aspects but not all of them.

Question 3: 

Show empathy with the speakers, do not judge their incorrect grammar, vocabulary, or sentence structure; instead, I will focus on the content of their speech to understand what they are saying to respond to them softly and sincerely.

Use simple words to talk with them and slow down my speed when speaking, repeat multiple times the important keywords while communicating with them.

Express the complicated meaning of the words or sentences throughout body language, symbols, or images.

Question 4: 

As an older brother in the house, my parents always give priorities to me rather than the younger one. They usually buy clothes, daily necessities, technical products for me first while my brother has to use my used products.

2

As an Asian, I usually earn admiration due to my wisdom and also my hard-working attitude from exchange students from many western countries. As a result, I can easily get along with them, and then I can expand my social network for future career opportunities.

At the age of 18, I am officially an adult now so that I can get rid of strict supervision from my parents and can do whatever I want. Unlike me, my brother is still under my parents’ supervision; as a result, he cannot drink alcohol, cannot go overnight, or cannot ride a motorcycle.

Portfolio Reflection: Throughout the session, I have learned the value of differences among regions around the world and pay respect to these differences, especially the cultural one. I also learned how to communicate effectively with non-native English speakers. On top of that, I was able to become a supportive and active speaker and responder by reading the course’s materials and experiencing practical workshops. Besides, when I take a deep look, the knowledge stem from the course is extremely useful since it is a part of communicating skills, an inevitable aspect of everyone’s life, and I can apply it casually while communicating with other people. Finally, from the moment that I knew all about this, I am certain that I will be able to communicate transparently with the listeners, rather than being arrogant and superior to the listeners.
