1.0 Leader’s Profile

Anthony Francis Fernandes born on April 30, 1964 is a Malaysian businessman. He is the CEO of AirAsia and sits on the number of boards and non-profit organization. Tony Fernandes was educated at The Alice Smith School, Kuala Lumpur from 1976 to 1983. Talking about Tony Fernandes experience before becoming a businessman, Tony Fernandes managed to be an auditor at Virgin Atlantic and a finance executive at Virgin Records. Owning an airline has been his dream since he was 6 years old. He later became a professional accountant and became a fellow in 1996. He is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). Initially, Tony Fernandes wanted to set up his own airline and voiced his opinion to his friend Datuk Kamarudin Meranun. His opinion was welcomed by Datuk Kamarudin Meranun and eventually they developed an airline using their own savings of RM1 million each and started the airline in May 2001 with his friend Aziz Bakar as well. He puts “Now everyone can fly” as a company’s tagline that still echoing until now. Before starting his own business, he was following his mother who sold Tupperware at Tupperware Parties. The beginning of AirAsia’s journey started when Tony Fernandes and his two friends sought the help of Datuk Pahamin A. Rejab the former secretary general of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs to meet with Tun Dr Mahathir in October 2001. During the meeting, Tun Dr Mahathir suggested Tony Fernandes to buy the airline existing as the government will not issue licenses for airlines at that time. In September 2001, Tony Fernandes decided to buy an existing airline, Air Asia, from DRB-Hicom Bhd through Tune Air Sdn Bhd. The business was started by making Tony the CEO of the company with the assets of 2 obsolete Boeing 737 aircraft, 200 existing employees as well as debts with Malaysia Airlines Bhd, Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd and Petronas with a value incurred of RM 20 million.

2.0 Leadership traits and skill

Leadership can be defined as the action of a Leader in an organization to formulate and mold business strategies and give instructions to his subordinates. Leadership can also be associated with situations where a leader generates good ideas and conveys them effectively and attractively to subordinate employees. Good leadership is leadership that can influence and motivate its subordinates to do the job as expected by delivering a clear, concise and interesting task information. Some people are endowed with physical attributes and personality aspects such as self-esteem and general intelligence that make them have a strong characteristic to become a great leader. These criteria describe the qualities of a leader to coordinate and formulate strategies to achieve goals. Tony Fernandes, as we already know is a CEO of AirAsia airline. He is a great leader who have a valuable leadership such as drive and also a very well -known leader in the field of business

Motivation

First skills that clearly indicate Tony Fernandes as a great leader is the motivation that he brings into the team. This leadership style inspires openly creating a vibrant business environment. Tony Fernandes created a work environment that allowed everyone to learn and pursue their passion which caused all Allstar employees to love their jobs. In addition, the motivation that can be felt by employees to work is by understanding the strategy and the company and actively focusing on low cost and low productivity. Fernandes also motivates AirAsia or Allstar Employees by giving an additional bonus to each of their participation to AirAsia productivity.

Integrity

A successful leader must have a power and technique to attract their employees to work together to achieve company goals. Tony Fernandes has a valuable leadership aside from his unique mindset and workstyle, Fernandes also not create any boundaries for communicate with

the subordinates, instead he refuses to work in the office and work outside by observing and tracking the progress of the business this workstyle called “Walk And Talk”. This trait of leaderships, can strengthen the bonding between the employees and boost their motivation to do their work. In addition, this can reduce the risk of malfunction in the organization such as abusement or manipulation of the power.

Extroversion Extroversion is one of the keys to upholding a leadership. It includes the ability to keep engage with people and influence the team. Tony Fernandes socializes with others to seek for business opportunities. He constantly updates his whereabouts through his personal blog in order to keep intact with others through his personal blog “Tonyfernandes.com

Self-Confidence Self -confidence in a business prospect refers to self -confidence over decisions made accompanied by willingness and readiness to face failure. Fernandes started the business with large debts. Even so, Fernandes formed a very great business strategy to deal with the situation by making low -cost airlines to attract more passengers. In addition, Tony Fernandes is also a leader who can adapt to the situation quickly. He does not have any experience in developing a business but with confidence in himself he can develop a magnificent company.

3.0 Leadership Behavior Transformational leadership can be defined as the action of a leader in changing the organization by creating, defining goals and guiding his employees to also achieve the goals. Transformational leadership style can be said to be a leadership style that is full of consideration and focuses on the advancement of the business and its employees. Transformational leadership style can be said to be a leadership style that is full of consideration and focuses on the advancement of the business and its employees. Tony Fernandes ’leadership style can be evaluated as a transformational leadership. He always helps his employees as a coach and mentor to those who help them achieve the company’s goals and their own goals. He encourages Allstar to be in their business by creating an opportunity for his employees to contribute in AirAsia’s business activities and also providing bonus for them.

Relations Orientation

Empowerment Tony Fernandes places employees as a main generator of AirAsia success and prioritizes employees over customers. He states that, "Our People Are Our Greatest Assets.". Tony Fernandes claims that AirAsia was useless without all their great employees therefore to produce more skilled employees, He provided training centers or AirAsia Academy. He also does not create hierarchical differences in the organization even though he is a CEO yet he is also part of the employees. This aims to make problem solving faster and management more effective by communicating with everyone. For example, Tony Fernandes gives his employees the opportunity to voice their opinions about the work system and allows them to determine the work system that suits them.

4.0 LEADERSHIP POWER

Reward Power

Tony Fernandes rewards his employees by giving them the opportunity to further their education to a higher level abroad. This is to produce quality employees by learning management knowledge and skills. Thus, business management will be more effective and efficient to achieve company goals. Besides that, in order to appreciate the employee contribution in AirAsia, Tony Fernandes rewarded their employees bonuses.

Referent Power

As we have noted that, Tony Fernandes is a leader who always communicates with his employees and "Anti-hierachy". Therefore, he is always a reference to his employees in matters relating to the management of the company. He allows all employees to ask him without doubt. In AirAsia management, the Management Center was placed in a single level with Tony Fernandes itself. Moreover, Tony Fernandes has been honoured as Emerging Entreprneur Of the Year- Malaysia 2003, Visionaries and Leadership series from Herald Tribune And Malaysian CEO of The Year 2003.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the unity of all leadership characters can create a great leader. It is clear that, Tony Fernandes is the Great Leader who has a high enthusiasm to achieve the goal and have the characteristics of skills and quality as a great leader. Additionally, he not only focused on his business and cared about the performance of his employees.
