MAR 200 TEST 1 BRIEF REVIEW SHEET

General study summary of exam 1 concepts/principles This is simply meant to list the major areas of interest covered to this point in the semester. This is not an exhaustive list of everything you might need to know for the test. It is purposefully vague, you’ll note that most of what we’ve covered is intricately connected so it would be difficult for me to let you know what you need for the test without telling you exactly what’s on the test.

Subject: Earth’s composition/formation *Be able to identify the major bodies of water. *Know the distribution of water on earth and among the oceans *Be able to describe the physical and chemical layers of the earth *Be able to describe the formation of the galaxy, earth, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere of the earth including potential places and methods for early life *How did we determine when oxygen first entered the environment

Subject: Plate Tectonics *Be able to walk through the entire Wilson’s cycle including discussing common features formed through opening of a new ocean (divergent boundary) starting from a sutured continent and all the way through closure (convergence). *Be able to give examples of modern day areas from each step of the Wilson’s cycle. *Know features associated with each phase of the Wilson’s cycle. What drives this process of plate tectonics? *Walk through the evidence for plate tectonics including how that evidence would indicate tectonic activity (remember that continental drift is evidence for plate tectonics.

Subject: Provinces *Be able to describe the provinces as you move across an ocean from continent to continent

MAR 200 TEST 1 BRIEF REVIEW SHEET *Compare and contrast active and passive margins including dominant features and relate them back to tectonic activity. *Be able to describe the major features of margins, abyssal plains and mid-ocean ridges as it pertains to provinces. *Be able to describe hydrothermal vent morphology, biology, and chemosynthesis.

Subject: marine sediments *Be able to differentiate between the dominant sediment types, their sources; where they end up and what dictates where they’re located. *Know the approximate distribution of sediment types between the oceans. *Be able to differentiate between sediment layering on the seafloor in the Atlantic and Pacific and why we would see those layers in sediment cores. Why is there a difference? *Know methods for gathering sediment information from the deep oceans *know how the major traits of sediment are imparted upon the sediment grains during transport (terrigenous). *Why do we care about ocean sediments? Subject: Paleo-oceanography *Be able to describe each of the stratigraphy’s *How does biostratigraphy help us understand past climate? *What does it tell us about climate change?
